Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Floyd Confirms 1 More Fight, Doesn't Enjoy Boxing

Rory MarsdenApr 14, 2015

Floyd Mayweather has confirmed he will fight just once more following May 2's megafight with Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The 38-year-old American will fulfil the sixth and final fight of his current Showtime contract but suggested he will hang up his gloves afterwards, having become disillusioned with the sport that has made him famous.

Mayweather's fight with Pac-Man is set to be the richest ever in boxing—with the purse projected to reach $300 million—and it looks to be the penultimate fight in the currently undefeated Money's glittering career, per Jeff Powell on MailOnline: "I'm pretty much done with all this. It's not fun like it was back then. It's business now. I don't really enjoy it any longer. [I'll fight a] final one at the MGM Grand in September."

Mayweather's record currently stands at 47-0, thus he will clearly be looking to end his career undefeated on 49 fights.

Pacquiao (57-2-5) will arguably be his toughest opponent yet, with May's fight set to finally see the two greatest fighters of their generation come head-to-head.

Despite the hype, however, Mayweather himself is not getting carried away, suggesting he is not excited for the occasion. Though he is clearly confident, citing several of Pacquiao's weaknesses, per Powell:

"

I'm not excited. This is another fight for me. Yeah it's big but basically it's no different from all the others. Once we get in that ring it's a level playing field. [...]

I'm calm, smooth, calculated and thinking five steps ahead of any opponent. But can [Pacquiao] adjust? He's a reckless fighter. We saw that when he got knocked out by (Juan Manuel) Marquez. If I fought as reckless as Manny. I wouldn't be here today. I'd be beaten up, worn out. I've controlled my fights.

"

It has been a long, drawn-out process getting Mayweather in the ring with the 36-year-old Filipino, and many are decrying the fact that it has come about so late in the pair's respective careers.

However, it still looks set to be a blockbuster occasion, and perhaps a better fight than would have been on show five years ago, per CompuBox's Bob Canobbio:

Both Mayweather and Pacquiao are in the latter stages of their respective careers, and it seems that the former has now set a date to retire.

There have also been suggestions that Pacquiao could call it a day on the back of May's Las Vegas clash, after he said he had just "one or two more fights" left in him, per Eddie Alinea on PhilBoxing.com.

Mayweather's legacy would be somewhat tainted by defeat to Pacquiao, and he may even look for a rematch should he lose his WBC and WBA welterweight belts.

However, what has come before will no doubt stand the test of time, and he will surely go down as one of the best boxers in history when he calls it a day.
