IPL 2015 Results: Rajasthan vs. Mumbai Score, Updated Table and Fixtures
Rajasthan Royals moved to the summit of the Indian Premier League standings, beating the Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in an absorbing encounter.
The match looked poised to be a short-lived affair after Mumbai lost a plethora of early wickets, but a superb counter-attacking partnership from Corey Anderson and Kieron Pollard pushed the Indians to a competitive total of 164 for five.
But the hosts were in control of the chase throughout their innings, with Steve Smith, who played superbly for his unbeaten 79, especially impressive. They secured the runs required with five balls to spare, preserving their perfect record at this tournament to date.
Here's how that result affects the overall standings, along with a look back at how the action played out in Ahmedabad.

Royals Edge Past Mumbai
3 of 3
Rajasthan Royals (165/3) beat Mumbai Indians (164/5) by seven wickets
After a dreadful start to their batting effort, superb half-centuries from Corey Anderson (50) and Kieron Pollard (70) pushed Mumbai to a total of 164 for five; at the end of the 10th over, they were 45 for three.
Rajasthan always looked in control of the chase, however. Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith provided a solid platform early on, with the latter shouldering the responsibility superbly in the latter stages and guiding his team to victory with a superb unbeaten 79.
The Indians won the toss and chose to bat, but initially, it didn’t look as though it was going to be their day. Dangerous opener Aaron Finch pulled up trying to run a quick single and was forced to retire hurt. Then, as if losing him wasn’t bad enough, Mumbai surrendered three vital wickets inside the first half of their innings.
When Anderson and Pollard came together, the Indians were in big trouble. But 104 runs later, they were well on their way to a much more competitive score, as the pair put together an exceptional partnership.
As we can see here, courtesy of Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, the manner in which Mumbai accelerated their innings was absolutely spectacular:
"#MI first 15 overs: 83-3 (RR: 5.53) #MI last 5 overs: 81-2 (RR: 16.20) #IPL #RRvMI #RR
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 14, 2015"
Pollard’s hitting was a particular highlight. He struck 70 off of just 34 balls, hammering seven fours and five sixes on his way to the total. It was an effort that breathed initiative back into the Indians’ cause, and with the steady Anderson in situ, he had the freedom to go hard at the ball as Mumbai gradually crept back into contention.
Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody paid tribute to the exploits of the West Indies star:
"Amazing power hitting by @KieronPollard55, giving @mipaltan a competitive total. 70 off 34balls #PepsiIPL
— Tom Moody (@TomMoodyCricket) April 14, 2015"
In the end, Mumbai finished up with a very respectable score of 164 for five. But Rajasthan are a quality outfit, and despite the early loss of Sanju Samson, they got their chase off to a solid start, with Rahane and Smith constructing a diligent partnership.
But after the former departed and the dangerous Deepak Hooda was bowled by Lasith Malinga, the match seemed to swing back in the favour of the Indians. It was at this juncture that Smith looked to take the fight to Mumbai.
As noted by AltCricket, the Aussie played with a real swagger in the latter stages of the match:
"The more I see Steve Smith bat, the more he reminds me of Kevin Pietersen at his very best.
— Alt Cricket (@AltCricket) April 14, 2015"
Indeed, even up against Malinga, Smith was boisterous in his hitting, smashing the Sri Lanka fast bowler for 15 in one over. He never let the run rate creep out of control, rotated the strike with ease and, as such, the result wasn't in doubt for the Rajasthan outfit.
Mumbai will rue their poor start and have Pollard to thank for making this a genuine contest. Had the top order put on a stronger showing, they could have definitely savoured victory here, but the total was low enough to allow the likes of Smith and Rahane to dictate the tempo of the response and coast to victory.
The Aussie match-winner continues to impress. Having shone in the Test arena and in the World Cup, here, Smith showcased the quality required to thrive in 20-over cricket, too. With performances like this, there will be a festering belief within this Royals squad that they have the quality and the temperament to go all the way in this year's competition.
