Overview
Delhi Daredevils have had a torrid start in the Indian Premier League. Having lost both of their matches to date, they now travel to last year's runners-up to try to right some of their wrongs. It's going to be a tricky outing, though. Kings XI have won nine out of the 14 games the two teams have played against each other and Delhi have not beaten Kings XI since 2012.
The good news for Delhi is that their hosts' batting has not exactly been consistent. In their first outing, they managed a meagre 136 while chasing 162, and in their second they posted 177 largely thanks to a lower order charge from George Bailey, who whacked 61 off 32. The other players have all contributed in dribs and drabs, but they have hardly looked threatening as a unit.
From a bowling perspective, Kings XI rely heavily on Mitchell Johnson, while Delhi will look toward Imran Tahir to lift them out of their slump. The South African spinner has already taken five wickets in two matches and those scalps have come at an eye-watering average of just 11.00. With Kings XI’s batting waning, Tahir could very well be the difference between the two sides.
It’s still early doors in the competition, though, and slip ups mean very little at this stage. There are miles to go before the pressure starts getting to players, but Delhi will want to break their duck while Kings XI will want to keep the good momentum going.
Key players
Kings XI
David Miller has managed just 47 runs in his two games, but he has shown time and time again that he is a seriously impressive player and Kings XI need to trust him enough to promote him up the order if the match situation so allows. With South Africa, Miller has shown that he is versatile and not just a lower-order slogger.
Delhi Daredevils
Imran Tahir is, without doubt, one of the best limited-overs bowlers in the world. On sub-continental tracks, he is a revelation and he never, ever allows batsmen to settle. Tahir’s excellent run during the recently concluded World Cup has certainly boosted his confidence, and he will be Delhi’s key player for much of the tournament.
