Spieth the Man to Catch on Sunday

It’s so refreshing to see Spieth in contention for the Masters title.

At just 21 years of age, the American has propelled himself to the top five of golf’s world rankings, and the way he’s played at Augusta has been exemplary.

He made hard work of Saturday’s round of 70, but to score like that on an off day is the stuff of dreams.

At 16 under and showing very few signs of taking his foot off the gas, Spieth now looks ready to claim his first major, having come second to Bubba Watson at last year’s Masters.

However, that’s the last thing that neutrals will want to see.

With Justin Rose lurking at 12 under par and fans’ favourite Phil Mickelson a further shot back, the stage is well and truly set for a dramatic finish.

If the duo can card a few birdies early doors, then the heat will very much be on Spieth to make a few of his own.

That’s exactly what Rose aims to do, too, as he told BBC Sport that he’ll be playing aggressive golf when he steps out alongside Spieth in the final group of the 2015 Masters:

"You've got to make committed, aggressive swings under pressure, and that's what I'm going to do on Sunday. Jordan is playing flawless golf right now and it is a big lead, but Augusta has a habit of throwing things up on the back nine.”

The Englishman’s experience of winning the 2013 U.S Open will also play into his hands, as he now knows what it takes to get across the line in a major.

At Merion in 2013, Rose saw off the challenge of Mickleson, who also knows a thing or two about winning big tournaments.

The left-hander’s five under par round of 67 was impeccable on Saturday, with his monster putt on 16 one of many round highlights—per the Masters:

Like Rose, Mickleson said catching Spieth at the top of the tree will take direct, aggressive play, via Golf Digest:

They’ll undoubtedly charge, as could Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods from 10 shots back in the group of the day, but it’s all about how Spieth handles the pressure.

Will he crumble like McIlroy back in 2011, or will he remain ice-cold?

All that will be answered very soon, but if Spieth does go on to win the green jacket, we can all doff our caps to a more than worthy champion.

Some of the golf he’s played over the week has been out of this world, with the putter once again proving to be his best friend.

Spieth will be the second-youngest Masters winner, after Tiger Woods in 1997, and to do that in wire-to-wire fashion would be quite incredible. Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman reflected on just how big an achievement awaits the American:

What he needs, then, is a mature head on young shoulders.

He’ll be playing for pars early on—fairways and greens—and that may be enough to see him over the line.

The good news for Spieth is, if someone gets close to catching him, he has the class to kick on and play himself out of sight.
