Masters 2015: Top Quotes and Takeaways from Final Round of Year's 1st Major

Nate LoopApr 12, 2015

There is a new superstar in the world of golf, as 21-year-old Jordan Spieth picked up his first major win at the 2015 Masters on Sunday, posting a final-round score of 70 to finish a staggering 18 under for the tournament.

Spieth was at 19 under through 17 holes on Sunday at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, but a bogey on No. 18 prevented him from setting a new Masters record.

Of course, Spieth had already made plenty of history at this edition of the Masters. PGA Tour rounded up his rewriting of the Masters record book:

Golf Digest provided comments from Spieth after his masterful win:

The young Texan's willingness to embrace the pressure of the game and take chances paid off Sunday as he fought to stay ahead of Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson, who tied for second at 14 under. His play on the No. 13 hole was especially impressive, as he drove directly at a front pin to set up a crucial birdie putt instead of laying up and playing it safe.

Rose, who played the final round alongside Spieth, seemed more than content with his performance, per Golf Digest's Mike O'Malley:

Mickelson was highly complementary of the ascendant star, per BBC Sport:

Spieth's excellent play over the past few months—three wins, two second-place finishes and just one missed cut in his last 10 tournaments—has cemented his status as one of the best players in golf today. He was so good at Augusta that he completely stole the attention away from one of the sport's other young superstars, Rory McIlroy, for nearly the entire weekend.

McIlroy was looking to complete the career grand slam this year at Augusta, but his strong play over the final three rounds—including a Sunday score of 66—was good enough for just a fourth-place finish at 12 under.

While McIlroy was busy creeping up the leaderboard Sunday, his playing partner, Tiger Woods, struggled to make a grand exit from the Masters.

Woods appeared to hurt his right wrist when striking a tree root on the ninth hole, per Golf Channel:

He provided perhaps the most shocking post-tourney remark of the day, via Jason Sobel of ESPN.com:

Injury woes have plagued Woods in recent years, and he was no lock to even play at Augusta after a two-month layoff from the PGA Tour. Still, his overall play was highly encouraging, and his presence adds visibility and excitement to nearly any tournament he participates in.

If Woods can avoid injury woes and simply get back to the form that won him five tournaments in 2013, golf is well set up for the future.

As Sobel notes, Spieth and McIlroy provide the game with a global reach:

That is to say nothing of the excellent play of Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, who finished in fifth place at 11 under and was one of the most consistent players in the tournament, with all four of his rounds coming in under par.

Matsuyama is just 23 years old. He has just one PGA Tour win on his resume but has racked up top-10 finishes at every major save for the PGA Championship. His presence, along with the likes of McIlroy, Spieth and even 26-year-old Rickie Fowler, provides the sport with a young international backbone of talent with which to excite fans.

Throw in a (hopefully) healthy Woods and the 44-year-old Mickelson—who has 10 second-place finishes in majors in his career to go along with five wins—and golf has a brilliant mix of young and old players who could very well create compelling rivalries in tournaments to come.

The future is bright for Spieth, but it might be even brighter for the sport as a whole.
