Georgia Football: Winners and Losers from Bulldogs' Spring Practices, Game
The Georgia Bulldogs have played their spring game, and some players stepped their game up, while a few did not have the best outing on Saturday.
However, the Bulldogs have two more practices next week, so the entire team will look to finish the spring season strong and go into the summer with a lot of momentum. But who stood out this spring? Who are the players to watch for as the team gears up for fall camp?
Here are the winners and losers from the Bulldogs' spring practices and game.
Winner: Faton Bauta
1 of 5
All three quarterbacks did some good things this spring. And because of that, one had to stand out during the spring game.
That was Faton Bauta, as he was 16-of-25 with 171 yards and one touchdown. He did not hit on any deep balls, but he was accurate and did not make any bad decisions.
That was the case all throughout spring practice, as he was able to make plays in the two scrimmages. And according to the Dawg Post, Bauta got better as the practices rolled on.
Bauta is known for his running ability, but he's a good decision-maker who has a solid arm. There is no reason he can't be the starter for the Bulldogs this season.
Loser: Offensive Line
2 of 5
The offensive line should be one of the team's strengths this season, but it did not look like it this spring.
The best way to analyze the offensive line was to watch the unit in the spring game, and it had plenty of issues in protecting the quarterbacks.
The biggest thing for the O-line is finding the right guy at center. With David Andrews gone, the Bulldogs have been looking at Hunter Long, Brandon Kublanow (who is the starting guard) and Isaiah Wynn. Wynn had his share of struggles in the spring game, along with Long. But once both players are comfortable at the position, the offensive line will be back to where it was last season.
Winner: Jake Ganus
3 of 5
Jake Ganus had a relatively quiet day in the spring game, but he did not have a quiet spring.
In the two scrimmages Ganus has played in, he tallied 19 tackles, one sack and one interception. In the G-Day Game, the inside linebacker had one tackle for loss, but he was able to play sideline-to-sideline all game long.
Ganus will have work to do in order to be a starting inside linebacker, but if he keeps up the intensity, he will see a lot of playing time this fall.
Loser: Wide Receivers
4 of 5
This is an area where the Bulldogs struggled last season, and it mostly had to do with injuries. But during the spring practices, the receivers had issues holding onto the football, and that can't happen in the fall.
In their defense, the quarterback situation has not been settled, and that does play a factor. But the group is too experienced to be making physical mistakes like dropping passes.
Also, Isaiah McKenzie and Malcolm Mitchell got injured in the spring game. Both injuries don't look too serious, but that's something all players try to avoid in a glorified practice.
Winner: A.J. Turman
5 of 5
Nick Chubb may be the star running back for the Bulldogs, but A.J. Turman was the most productive this spring.
The Florida native rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Black Team over the Red Team in the spring game. Furthermore, he is coming off a spring scrimmage last week where he rushed for 140 yards and two scores.
Turman has not played one down since arriving in Athens because of various injuries. He is hungry to get on the field, and he is now 100 percent healthy.
And according to Seth Emerson of the Macon Telegraph, this is an important year for Turman because he is between two great running back classes.
It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff rotates the running backs because Turman, Chubb, Sony Michel, Keith Marshall and Brendan Douglas can all make plays.
