Gayle Gets Bangalore Home in a Thriller
3 of 4
Royal Challengers Bangalore (179/7) beat Kolkata Knight Riders (177/6) by three wickets
A fast start and blistering finish helped Kolkata to a score of 177 for six from their 20 overs, with a half-century from Gautam Gambhir and a late flourish from Andre Russell the key contributions.
It was a score the Bangalore struggled to chase for the majority of the innings, but an absolutely stunning knock from Chris Gayle, who made 96 off 56 balls, helped his side over the line.
After Kolkata were put into bat, Robin Uthappa (35) and Gambhir (58) set the tone superbly with a brisk 81-run partnership, building an excellent platform for the Knight Riders’ big hitters.
Skipper Gambhir was particularly impressive during his time at the crease and as noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, he is an expert in this particular competition:
"Most IPL 50s: Gambhir: 25 Raina: 24 Rohit: 23 Gayle: 20 Warner: 19 #IPL #KKRvRCB #KKR #RCB
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 11, 2015"
But some timely wickets from the Royal Challengers sapped momentum from the reigning champions. After the two openers were dismissed, neither Manish Pandey (23) or Suryakumar Ashok Yadav (11) could capitalise on starts.
Russell gave his team some crucial late impetus, though. The West Indies international smashed an unbeaten 41 off just 17 balls to push Kolkata towards a solid score of 117 for four.
As noted by cricket statistician Mohandas Menon, Russell is a player that scores extremely quickly in this dynamic format:
"Highest batting S/r in T20s min 1000 runs 168.56 Colin de Grandhomme 165.93 Andre Russell 157.74 Glenn Maxwell #KKRvRCB #IPL
— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) April 11, 2015"
But given how many quality batsmen there are in this Challengers line-up, it was a score that was by no means safe. That was emphasised even further, when the talented pairing of Virat Kohli and Gayle strode out to open the innings for the Bangalore outfit.
The latter looked in fine fettle, but the rest of this stellar batting line-up toiled under the pressure of the chase. Kohli was dismissed for just 13, before Yusuf Pathan picked up the next two wickets of Dinesh Karthik and Mandeep Singh, who could only make six runs each.
But even at 56 for three, the Bangalore outfit would have fancied their chances, as AB de Villiers walked out next. He signalled his intentions early on with an array of superb shots, but he was a little too aggressive charging down the pitch on his 13th ball, as KC Cariappa had the South African stumped for 28.
As noted, it was a special moment for the spin-bowler and a huge wicket in the context of the match:
"Two months ago no one knew who KC Cariappa was. Now he’s got AB de Villiers out in Eden Gardens. Magic of the #IPL. #KKRvRCB #RCB #KKR
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 11, 2015"
Even after Darren Sammy departed in similar fashion leaving Bangalore 119 for five, Gayle was still in situ and still swinging hard at the ball. He reached 50 off 37 balls and after smashing a few more to the boundary, was then handed a huge reprieve when dropped by Morne Morkel.
Despite losing another capable partner in Sean Abbott, the Caribbean star continued to take the fight to the Kolkata bowlers and with four overs to go he turned on the style, smashing a flurry of sixes and putting the Challengers to within touching distance of a famous victory.
There was another twist when the West Indies star was run out in bizarre circumstances—Gayle thought he has hit the ball for six, but it was in play—for 96. But by that point, Bangalore needed less than a run-a-ball and they coasted to victory with six deliveries remaining.
As noted by AltCricket, Gayle's effort was extremely special:
"Chris Gayle STATBYTE: First 28 balls: 34 runs Last 28 balls: 62 runs
— Alt Cricket (@AltCricket) April 11, 2015"
For Bangalore, this win will be such a momentum-booster. They never really looked likely to chase down the target required until Gayle's late heroics and while they were far from their very best, with a player like him in their ranks and in form, there is every chance of them going far in this competition.
Chennai Show Their Class to Beat Hyderabad
4 of 4
Chennai Super Kings (209/4) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (164/6) by 45 runs
Tournament favourites Chennai Super Kings turned in a quality performance in their second IPL game of the season, securing an emphatic victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Brendon McCullum was the star for the hosts, as his remarkable unbeaten hundred helped Chennai to a score of 209 for four. It was an imposing total and one that the Sunrisers fell well short of, that despite a fine half-century from opening batsman David Warner.
The Super Kings were perilously close to suffering a shock loss to Delhi Daredevils in their tournament opener, but they were in much better fettle here. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, McCullum set the tone in stunning style.
He hogged the strike in the early stages, playing in his typically belligerent style and putting the Hyderabad bowlers under big pressure. Despite losing Dwayne Smith and Suresh Raina cheaply, he continued to force the issue for Chennai and when MS Dhoni joined him at the crease, the Super Kings moved through the gears.
As we can see here courtesy of cricket statistician Mohandas Menon, the Indian skipper was magnificent after coming out to bat:
"End of 14th over Brendon McCullum 84* MS Dhoni 1* --------------------- Start of 20th over Brendon McCullum 89* MS Dhoni 49* #IPL #CSKvsSRH
— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) April 11, 2015"
Dhoni made 53 from 29 before being dismissed in the final over, but with 198 runs on the board, the damage had already been done by the Super Kings. After some late flashes from McCullum, they eventually finished on 209 for four, with the New Zealander going to 100 off the final ball of the Chennai innings.
As noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPN cricinfo, it was a superb effort from the New Zealand star:
"This is Brendon McCullum's world; we just live in it. #IPL #CSKvSRH #CSK #SRH
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 11, 2015"
It was always going to be a very tough chase for Hyderabad, but with men like Shikhar Dhawan and Warner at the top of the order, it was by now means impossible. Despite their best efforts, neither batsman was able to get into a rhythm early on and as such, an already heady required rate soared.
Credit must go to the Chennai bowling attack too. They were well rounded in their displays, bowled with control and took wickets at vital times. Warner remained resolute, but after losing Dhawan and Lokesh Rahul to Mohit Sharma inside the opening six overs, they were on the back foot early.
With the spin of Ravichandran Ashwin strangling scoring in the middle overs, the rate quickly became unattainable:
"Ravichandran Ashwin 1 1 1 • • 1 • • 1 1 2 6 2 1 W 1 • 1 • 1 • • 1 1 4-0-22-1. #IPL #CSKvSRH #CSK #SRH
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 11, 2015"
Warner eventually departed for 53 trying to hammer one out of the park, but the Sunrisers had long given up the ghost at this juncture. Chennai coasted to victory and will take great confidence from this much improved performance and a sizeable winning margin.
Encouragingly for the Super Kings, the two most important batsmen—Dhoni and McCullum—in this set-up have look to be in sparkling form. If they continue to perform with such swagger, it’s tough to see anyone stopping this multifaceted Chennai side.
