Grand National 2015 Results: Winner, Payouts and Order of Finish

Matt JonesApr 11, 2015

Leighton Aspell seized history on board Many Clouds at a sun-drenched Aintree Racecourse, winning the 2015 Grand National in an absorbing race.

After winning the showpiece on Pineau de Re last year, Aspell notched his second triumph in 12 months, finishing a length ahead of second place Saint Are after steering his ride to the front three fences from home. It was the third National win in the career of the horse's owner Trevor Hemmings.

Monbeg Dude and Alvorado took third and fourth place respectively in the world’s most iconic steeplechase, while AP McCoy was fifth on Shutthefrontdoor, despite looking well placed in the latter stages.

Channel 4 Racing showed us the moment Aspell crossed the line:

After back-to-back wins at Aintree, Aspell was naturally delighted in the aftermath and paid tribute to the horse's unrelenting endurance, per BBC Sport:

"

That was awesome. Many Clouds is a tired boy, he gave his all like he always does but what a wonderful ride round. It was all guts. We went around the canal turn and AP McCoy was full of running but he pricked his ears and was in front.

I could hear a couple of horses but I couldn't see anything and I was hoping for a couple to push us on because it is a lonely place.

"

Ahead of the race, all eyes were on were on the retiring McCoy, with the legendary jockey insisting that he’d walk away from racing should he sample victory in this most famous of jump races. Riding the favourite, there were naturally plenty of punters who lumped on the Irishman to notch his second National triumph.

As we can see here courtesy of BBC Sport, the bookmakers will have had their fingers crossed that McCoy faltered on his final Aintree appearance:

But there were plenty of other contenders for this race and given the National’s notorious reputation for springing shocks down the years, Shutthefroontdoor was always going to face a major fight to cross the finishing line first.

As the clock ticked down towards the big race, space was at a premium on the sidelines, as we can see here:

The roar that greeted the riders and horses as the race got underway was typically spine-tingling, as Aintree took a collective deep breath, hoping their respective picks made it past that dangerous opening fence. But three fell at the first before the race settled down into a rhythm.

Balthazar King—second here last year—was the first of the big favourites to fall at the eighth fence, with Shutthefrontdoor and Rocky Creek looking in excellent shape as the horses approached halfway, passing a raucous grand stand.

As we can see, the field was extremely tightly bunched, with plenty of horses still in with an excellent chance:

Passing the Melling Road it was Many Clouds in the front, with McCoy in hot pursuit and looking capable of reeling in the leader. But Shutthefrontdoor faded badly and despite a late charge from Saint Are, Aspell did just enough to get his ride over the line and sample the familiar feeling of Grand National glory.

It was a magnificent day for Many Clouds, as he jumped serenely around these difficult fences and kept composure throughout. Aspell was superb once again in the saddle, positioning the horse superbly in the latter stages and timing his run to the finish line with distinction.

While all eyes were on McCoy and his stunning achievements, after two wins in two years at the world's most demanding horse race, Aspell is fashioning his own glittering reputation late in his career. When you consider the 38-year-old had previously retired from the sport, his turnaround in fortunes in remarkable and testament to his unwavering focus and irrepressible dedication.
