Sunday Recap

The derby belongs to Manchester United. Four different players scored goals and Old Trafford rocked into the night Sunday, as United scored a 4-2 victory over Manchester City in a dominant showing between the two rivals.
After Sergio Aguero scored his first of two goals in the eighth minute, United took over the match on both ends. Ashley Young knotted the score in the 14th minute, Marouane Fellaini added another in the 27th and Juan Mata and Chris Smalling each knocked one through in the second half to give United a 4-1 lead. Aguero added another goal in the 89th minute to make the score more respectable, but anyone who watched came away noticing the obvious dichotomy between the two sides.
The first 10-15 minutes they (City) were brilliant but after that the team showed character," Mata said, per ITV. "It's a massive win for us, a massive result. The atmosphere was crazy. It's something we'll never forget. It's a big win, it's a boost of confidence but we still have games to go. We have to fight until the last minute."
United were on their game from the outset, hitting seven shots on goal to City's three. The City defense was at times extremely relaxed, allowing clear paths for passes and open lanes for shots. United only had to attempt 11 shots to get their seven on goal. On the other side, David De Gea only had one save, with the United defense doing a nice job at thwarting any headway made by the City attack.

The win keeps United in a solid position to overtake Arsenal for second place in the table. City, meanwhile, are going to have to be careful going forward; Southampton is only five points behind in the table following this recent down stretch.
In the day's other match, Chelsea were able to maintain their standing atop the table with a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers. Cesc Fabregas netted a goal in the 88th minute, good for their only shot on goal of the match. QPR were playing a defense-first match throughout and nearly pulled off a draw that would have been huge in helping them avoid relegation.
Instead, it's looking more and more likely they'll be headed down in 2015-16.
Saturday Recap
Saturday's action kicked off with a battle between mid-table teams in the form of Swansea City and Everton. While the Swans have enjoyed one of their best EPL seasons to date, there is no question that the Toffees have performed below expectations.
Everton entered the contest with history on their side, though, as they had never before lost to Swansea in Premier League play, according to OptaJoe on Twitter:
That fact seemed to give them confidence in the first half as midfielder Aaron Lennon scored in the 41st minute to put them ahead 1-0. The pesky Swans would not go away, though, and they eventually equalized.
Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute to tie it up at Liberty Stadium, and that 1-1 score would hold up for the remainder of the match.
With that draw, Swansea equaled their best points total in their EPL history with 47, per Premier League on Twitter:
It wasn't the prettiest performance from the Swans' perspective as they were outshot and outplayed for much of the contest, but they came through when it mattered most.
A win at home would have gone a long way toward closing the gap on seventh-placed Southampton, but the draw solidified their spot in eighth and continued what has been a very fruitful campaign.
Speaking of Southampton, the Saints kept rolling Saturday as well with a home victory over Hull City by a score of 2-0.
Southampton scored a pair of second-half markers with the game winner coming by way of James Ward-Prowse on a penalty kick. Perhaps even more importantly, though, forward Graziano Pelle provided the insurance in the 81st minute.
According to OptaJoe, that goal ended a lengthy scoring drought for the Italian:
If Pelle can gain some confidence and continue to contribute offensively moving forward, then the Saints have a great opportunity to close the campaign on a high note.
Sunderland had high hopes entering their home clash with Crystal Palace, but they were blitzed by the Eagles in the second half and ultimately suffered a 4-1 defeat.
Crystal Palace scored four goals from the 48th minute through the 62nd minute with three of them coming courtesy of forward Yannick Bolasie.
It took the English striker a mere 11 minutes to record a hat trick, which was incredible considering his scoring struggles throughout the season, per Squawka Football:
Bolasie's hat trick was as historic as it was impressive due to the fact that it was an EPL first for Crystal Palace:
The Eagles are well clear of the relegation zone, but the Black Cats are a mere three points up on 17th place, which means Bolasie's sterling effort could very well come back to haunt them by season's end.
Tottenham Hotspur entered Saturday's home tilt with Aston Villa hoping to protect their spot near the top of the EPL standings, but things certainly didn't go according to plan for Spurs.
The Lions escaped White Hart Lane with a 1-0 win by virtue of a goal from the red-hot Christian Benteke.
Per Squawka Football, the Belgian forward has been one of the EPL's most dangerous scorer since the calendar turned from 2014 to 2015:
As evidenced by the shutout defeat, Harry Kane did not net a goal for Tottenham, which halted his progress toward a potential scoring title. Getting a positive result was the most important things for Spurs, though, and they failed in that regard on their home pitch.
West Bromwich Albion seemed destined to come away with a victory Saturday over cellar-dwelling Leicester City, but a late collapse by the Baggies resulted in a 3-2 loss.
West Brom led 2-1 after 26 minutes thanks to goals from Darren Fletcher and Craig Gardner. They held that lead until the 80th minute when the Foxes equalized on a Robert Huth goal.
All signs pointed toward a draw after that, but Leicester City shockingly stole a win when midfielder Jamie Vardy scored in extra time.
The win kept the Foxes in the hunt to avoid relegation, and it also marked their first EPL win away from home this season:
Leicester City may not boast quite as much talent as most of the other EPL teams, but their never-say-die attitude more than made up for it Saturday.
As dramatic as Vardy's goal was for the Foxes, it paled in comparison to what Stoke City was able to do against West Ham United as they stole a 1-1 draw on the road.
The Hammers were seemingly seconds away from victory, but the Potters kept pushing, and they were ultimately rewarded with a tying goal by midfielder Marko Arnautovic in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
That result means that the two clubs remain deadlocked at 43 points firmly in the middle of the table. That is just fine with Stoke considering the alternative, but there is no doubt that West Ham fans were left with a bad taste in their mouths.
Saturday's EPL finale featured Burnley hosting Arsenal in a match that seemed one-sided on paper. The result was ultimately expected with the Gunners coming out on top, but the Clarets turned in a very respectable performance.
Aaron Ramsey's 12th-minute goal was the only offense in a 1-0 decision that saw Burnley limit Arsenal's scoring chances throughout.
It only took one goal for the Gunners to prevail, though, and it extended their longest winning streak in more than a decade, according to OptaJoe:
Arsenal continued to keep their title hopes alive by pulling within four points of table-leading Chelsea, although the Blues have two matches in hand.
The Gunners are going to need some help in order to win it all in the form of some Chelsea losses and draws, but they have a fighting chance if they can maintain their current form.
