Dustin Johnson Sets Masters Record with 3 Eagles in Round 2
Most professional golfers would be happy to record just one eagle in a single round at the Masters. Dustin Johnson pulled off three eagles through 15 holes Friday at the Augusta National Golf Club.
The 30-year-old picked up eagles on the second, eighth and 15th holes in the second round, which set a tournament record, per the Masters' Twitter account.
As ESPN Stats & Info noted, Johnson has historically had success with some of Augusta's longer holes. He picked up two eagles in a round on two different occasions:
Johnson's first eagle Friday was preceded by a double-bogey to start Round 2. Sports Illustrated's John Garrity shared a quip from fellow SI coworker Alan Shipnuck about how that two-hole stretch summed up Johnson's best and worst attributes:
The Masters is the one major that has given Johnson the most trouble in the past. He boasts multiple top-10 finishes in the other three majors, but the highest he has placed at Augusta is 13th, and his average finish in his other four appearances is 43.5.
Johnson wasn't lights out in the first round, but a two-under 70 helped keep him in the discussion. And after Friday's impressive showing, he might be able to seriously challenge Jordan Spieth for the lead over the weekend.
He has looked better and better every tournament since returning to the PGA Tour back in February, and this might be the year Johnson has a serious breakthrough at Augusta.
