Jordan Spieth at Masters 2015: Leaderboard Score, Twitter Reaction from Friday

Adam WellsApr 10, 2015

Jordan Spieth is making the 2015 Masters look easy. The 21-year-old budding superstar, who finished tied for second at Augusta last year, is on a historic pace after two rounds. He shot a six-under 66 on Friday to move his overall score to 14 under par.

Here's the full leaderboard as play continues in the second round:

When the Texas native got to 12 under after the 28th hole, it was four holes faster than the man who previously held the 36-hole scoring record at the Masters, per Golf Channel:

Spieth passed Raymond Floyd's 36-hole score with a birdie on the 15th hole to put him at 14 under.

Ben Smith of the BBC noted Spieth's total of 130 shots through 36 holes is the best in major championship history:

As far as how Spieth felt setting a record, here's what he told reporters after the round, via Mike McAllister of the PGA Tour website:

ESPN's Jason Sobel offered this nugget:

It's a testament to how good the competition has been at Augusta this year that even with this historic stretch of play, Spieth isn't running away from the field. Nick Mathews of the Houston Chronicle noted that Charley Hoffman, who was the early leader Thursday before Spieth teed off, is doing all he can to keep pace:

For a comparison of how Spieth has done at the Masters from year to year, ESPN Stats & Info noted he already has more birdies through 36 holes in 2015 than he had in 72 holes last year:

Based on the early returns for Spieth, he's on pace to become the first wire-to-wire winner at Augusta since Trevor Immelman captured the green jacket in 2008, and the first since Raymond Floyd in 1976 to win it wire-to-wire without being tied for the lead at the end of any rounds. He's also four shots behind Woods' scoring record of 18 under par set in 1997.

However, before we crown Spieth with a fitted jacket and title of America's next great golf superstar, ESPN's Bob Harig did attempt to throw some ice on the fire:

At this point, it seems the only thing that can stop Spieth is himself. One thing that will change heading into the weekend is his tee time. The young superstar was on the course late Thursday and early Friday, giving him little time to overanalyze the intricacies of his game.

Spieth ended the second round at roughly 3 p.m. ET and now will likely have 15-20 hours to hear everyone talking about what he's done so far. Pressure hasn't gotten to him thus far, though he did leave a couple of strokes out there with some issues on the green, but that's nitpicking at this point.

Per McAllister, Spieth said after the round that he's expecting the grounds crew to try something new on Saturday with so many low scores:

It's also interesting that Spieth would be dominating on this particular course. Augusta is known as one that's favorable for players with power and distance off the tee, like Bubba Watson, but that's not Spieth's game. He's tied for 55th in driving distance this season, per PGATour.com.

Having everything else, including accuracy, in sync can make up for that lack of distance off the tee.

It's been assumed since his breakout run at Augusta last year that Spieth was destined for greatness. He wasn't able to capitalize on it in the subsequent majors in 2014, culminating in a missed cut at the PGA Championship, but the learning experience has carried over to 2015.

There's still a lot of golf left to be played—though besides Hoffman, no one else is within shouting distance right now—so Spieth can't afford to get complacent. One more great round Saturday will likely give him the chance to take a victory lap Sunday.

Regardless of what's to come, Spieth has provided more great moments through 36 holes than most players do in their entire career at the Masters.
