Masters Leaderboard 2015: Twitter Reacts to Results and Standings from Thursday

Chris RolingApr 9, 2015

Jordan Spieth ran roughshod on the competition at Augusta Thursday.

The 21-year-old superstar shot out to an eight-under 64 finish, a full three strokes above the next closest green-jacket hopeful. Spieth shot nine birdies, including five over the course of his first 10 holes, his only hiccup coming at No. 15.

Behind Spieth rests a four-way tie for second place at five under par consisting of Jason Day, Charley Hoffman, Justin Rose and Ernie Els.

Here's a full look at the leaderboard with Round 1 in the books:

Spieth wound up stealing the spotlight by day's end, but the early Thursday story was all about Hoffman.

The California native finished with a five-under 67 on the day, which shouldn't come as a big surprise—Hoffman finished tied for 11th in his last two starts, the Valero Texas Open and Shell Houston Open.

He fired five birdies on the day to counteract two bogeys, along with a pretty eagle on No. 15, as the tournament captures on Twitter:

In all, not bad for a guy making his second appearance at Augusta and teeing off first behind Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus, a trio he was intimidated to approach for an autograph before starting his impressive day.

"I was sort of scared," the 38-year-old said, per ESPN.com's Jason Sobel. "Should I ask them? Should I not ask them? My mind wasn't really on golf. I was watching those guys."

Hoffman wasn't alone in the impressive-eagle department.

Matt Kuchar knocked in a pretty one on No. 13:

He finished even, though, the highlight diminished by a double bogey on No. 8. Danny Willett came in at one under par but put on a show of his own at No. 13:

But back to the top of the leaderboard, where Rose and Els caught right up with Hoffman due to splashy shots and consistency, not just the former.

Rose has been erratic as of late, getting cut and tying for 37th in his last two outings. He put the form behind him at Augusta, though, where he has recorded four consecutive top-25 finishes. Thursday, he shot six birdies to one bogey.

As Sobel illustrates on Twitter, Rose is quite familiar with leading the opening round:

The 45-year-old Els hasn't been in top form as of late either, but he banged home five birdies and an eagle on No. 15 to also finish at five under 67.

PGA Tour provided the discrepancy between the veteran and the leader:

Day rode a late surge to a five-under 67 and a tie for second place as well thanks to a wicked back nine highlighted by five birdies.

Gary Williams of Golf Channel put it best during Day's strong streak:

Of course, no talk of the Masters would be complete without mention of Tiger Woods.

Woods was erratic at best Thursday, although the pattern appeared obvious. He shot three birdies on par-five holes but struggled on shorter holes with four bogeys on the day to finish one over 73.

Thursday was an improvement for Woods, although it didn't meet expectations, which were high for obvious reasons. In fact, Woods' own thoughts on his day after an errant shot stick out:

A full 40 spots above Woods rests Spieth in first place. Impressive, although it's important to note that the last time the first-round leader went on to win at Augusta was 2008 (Trevor Immelman).

The ebbs and flows of a four-day event tend to prevent such an occurrence—although Spieth seems to be in a form not keen on cooperating with the notion. As ESPN Stats & Info notes, he just about shattered a course record:

Many took to social media to congratulate Spieth, including former NFL kicker Jay Feely :

The thing is, there's little doubt the next three days will be just as competitive. Day and Rose seem to be on a tear, and notables such as Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Phil Mickelson are within six strokes of the lead, which is sure to diminish unless Spieth remains in historic form.

Regardless, Thursday was just the opening salvo of one of the sport's top events.
