Message for UFC Fighters: To Be the Best You Have To Beat the Best
In the business of fighting, you are a fighter. Your job is to fight whomever you are asked. I have participated in sports my entire life, including martial arts and wrestling, and it is ridiculous to think that I would never compete against friends or teammates.
The fact is, my best matches were against teammates and training partners. I was always honored to face those who were the most familiar with me. I would even work that much harder during a match to pull out the win because of the respect that we had for one another.
Competition, in general, is about pushing oneself. What better way to test yourself than to fight those that train with you day in and day out? If you are serious about being the best, then you should welcome the challenge.
Of course, there are drawbacks to fighting friends and teammates.
How would you train for a fight with a teammate? Where does your coach stand? Who would your other training partners train with? These are just some of the questions that would have to be answered in order for teammates to fight.
I feel that if any fighter is truly on a quest to be the best, he would never say there are fighters he would not fight.
If you want to be the best and cement your legacy, you need to fight the best. If you are unwilling to test yourself, then where do you really stand?
