IPL 2015 Results: Updated Scores, Schedule and Table After Chennai vs. Delhi
The Chennai Super Kings lived up to their tag as the 2015 Indian Premier League favourites, as they showed steel aplenty to beat the Delhi Daredevils by one run in what was a tense tournament opener for both sides.
Having won the toss, Delhi put Chennai into bat and JP Duminy’s decision was proved to be the correct one, as his bowlers restricted a dangerous Super Kings line-up to just 150 for seven. Dwayne Smith top scored with 34, while Nathan Coulter-Nile was impressive with the ball, taking three for 30 off his four overs.
The Daredevils response started poorly, losing a flurry of wickets early on and failing to chase down their 151 target with any real conviction. Albie Morkel played superbly for his half-century, but ultimately it proved to be in vain, as the Delhi outfit lost soft wickets at critical times in the match.
Here’s how this result affects the overall tournament standings and a closer examination of how the action played out on Day 2 of this IPL season.

Chennai Grind out a Win Against Delhi
3 of 3
Chennai Super Kings (150/7) beat Delhi Daredevils (149/9) by one run
Here’s how the two sides shaped up for this one, per Sky Sports Cricket:
"Join us for @ChennaiIPL v @DelhiDaredevils on SS2 now! Delhi have won the toss & will bowl #PepsiIPL #DDvsCSK @IPL pic.twitter.com/ZeZH43mOZl
— Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) April 9, 2015"
It was a tough start for the Super Kings, as Delhi took some crucial early wickets, the most important of which being Brendon McCullum. The Black Caps star showed a measure of his intent by hitting his first ball to the boundary, but was on his way back to the dressing room the very next ball after skying one off Nathan Coulter-Nile.
While his dismissal was a blow, Suresh Raina wasn’t a bad replacement. But the IPL specialist also fell for just four, leaving Chennai struggling on 38 for two in the fourth over. As such, it was left to Smith to take the early initiative and he made 34 at a shade quicker than a run-a-ball.
As OptaJim reminded us, the West Indies star is a dangerous player in this format:
"336 - Dwayne Smith scored more runs (336) and boundaries (54) in power play overs in IPL 2014 than anyone else. Impetus. #CSKvDD @ChennaiIPL
— OptaJim (@OptaJim) April 9, 2015"
In the ninth over he was gone too, leaving Super Kings’ middle order exposed. Faf du Plessis counter-attacked well initially to go to 32, but he fell victim to the spin of compatriot JP Duminy. From that point on, Chennai really struggled to inject any impetus into their play, with some tidy bowling and timely wickets from Delhi slowing things down.
Ravindra Jadeja grew frustrated against the excellent Amit Mishra and was stumped for 17, before the dangerous Dwanye Bravo played around one and was trapped lbw. In the end some late flashes from Dhoni—who made 30 from 27 balls—helped Chennai to 150 for seven.
In response, the Daredevils got off to the worst possible start as both Mayank Agarwal and Chidhambaram Gautam were dismissed in the third over by Ashish Nehra, leaving Delhi toiling on 20 for two.
India legend Virender Sehwag paid tribute to the efforts of the bowler:
"Wow old is gold nehra ji on fire . Love ur work nehra ji keep doing that ...
— Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) April 9, 2015"
When Shreyas Iyer was dismissed not long after, the Daredevils looked to be staring down the barrel of a defeat. But Albie Morkel and Kedar Jadhav rebuilt the innings with a solid 38-run partnership. As Jadhav departed, Delhi needed 64 off 41 balls with six wickets remaining.
Next in was the popular Yuvraj Singh, but he was done by a short ball to leave Delhi five down and suddenly a lot more nervous in their chase. But the loss of Duminy not long after made Chennai favourites to triumph.
Morkel was still there though and with a run rate of circe 10 runs an over, they still had a chance. But when Coulter-Nile fell in the 18th over, Chennai were closing in. It came down to the last over, but they eventually had enough to squeak over the line, despite Morkel smashing a towering six and a four off the last ball to heap the pressure on.
This wasn’t the best performance from Chennai and Dhoni will be looking for his team to play at a much higher level as the tournament rumbles on. But they showcased the kind of steely mentality that is needed in these tight matches and that underpinning fortitude will be absolutely vital in their pursuit of glory.
They also showcased a side to their play other than their revered batting, as the bowlers took centre stage this time round. Having that balance to their set-up is critical to their chances and a hugely underrated facet of this Chennai team.
