Kolkata Knight Riders Open Defence with Victory
3 of 3
Kolkata Knight Riders (170/3) bt. Mumbai Indians (168/3) by seven wickets
Ahead of Wednesday's opener in Kolkata, it looked like anyone's game, with Kolkata and Mumbai seemingly relatively evenly matched.
Early wickets fell for the Indians, but Corey Anderson and Rohit Sharma made telling contributions. Mumbai would have wanted to set a bigger target ahead of play, however.
Kolkata Knight Riders looked composed in the chase and reached the 169 target with nine balls remaining as they started their IPL defence with a strong win.
KKR won the toss and elected to field first, and Morne Morkel took the wicket of danger-man Aaron Finch for five in the second over.
Rohit and Aditya Tare then engineered a mini partnership, before the latter fell for seven to Shakib Al Hasan in the fifth over.
Morkel's brilliant dismissal of Ambati Rayudu for a duck soon after left the Mumbai Indians struggling on 37-3, but Rohit and new-man Anderson forced their team back into the game.
Not another wicket fell for Mumbai as Rohit smashed an unbeaten 98 from 64 balls to move into second place in the IPL's all-time highest scorers, per cricket writer Freddie Wilde:
"Most IPL Runs: Raina 3325 Rohit: 3001 Gambhir: 2806 Gayle: 2708 Kohli: 2632 #IPL #KKRvMI #KKR #MI
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) April 8, 2015"
Anderson continued his form from the World Cup to ably assist his skipper with a quick-fire 55, including three maximums.
The pair managed to move Mumbai onto a relatively respectable score of 168 from their 20 overs, but it looked to potentially be under-par with Kolkata a strong batting unit.

Robin Uthappa fell early to Anderson, for nine in the third over. However, Kolkata never looked hugely troubled, and skipper Gautam Gambhir and Manish Pandey moved the score rapidly to 98.
Mumbai put down a couple of key catches, but eventually got their second wicket, as Pandey miscued a heave to Kieron Pollard off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh.
The rapid scoring from Kolkata did not slow, though, as new batsman Suryakumar Yadav eased his second ball for six over deep square leg.
Gambhir was dismissed for 57 in the 15th over, but with wickets in hand, the Knight Riders were in the driving seat.

The 17th over was telling as Yadav and Yusuf Pathan hit 20 from it, leaving Kolkata needing just a run a ball to win.
Even Lasith Malinga was victim of some huge hitting, and Kolkata eventually cruised to victory in the penultimate over with seven wickets to spare.
Mumbai will look to bounce back when they face Kings XI Punjab in their second match on Sunday, while Kolkata have Royal Challengers Bangalore next up.
