2015 Masters Tournament Preview

For those who've tuned out golf amid Tiger Woods' lengthy hiatus from competition—good news! Woods is back at Augusta National, making his first start since early February's Farmers Insurance Open, where he withdrew due to injury.
Woods being in the field makes golf better. The Masters will be even more entertaining if Woods is in the hunt on Sunday, which seems like a realistic possibility considering he's a four-time champion.
Let's not detract from the storyline that follows the new world No. 1, Rory McIlroy, who's seeking to complete the career Grand Slam. Comparisons to Woods will persist the more majors McIlroy piles up.
Instead of setting a specific target, McIlroy has said in the past that he's taking each major one at a time. Nevertheless, the following number from Steve Elling of Golf Blotter hints at how on point McIlroy has been in the most important tournaments:
The first two rounds will see McIlroy commence his quest for the only major missing from his resume alongside three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson, which will draw a gallery, to say the least.
As much young talent as exists in the game right now, headlined by McIlroy, 21-year-old Jordan Spieth is in exceptional form.
Spieth seems to have a simplistic game plan, one that's worked wonders as of late, via Golf Central:
American golf's next big thing has to be Spieth, who tied for second and played in the final pairing with Bubba Watson in 2014. Spieth has actually played in the last group in the last round in each of his past three starts.
Speaking of Watson, McIlroy named him as the favorite on Tuesday, per Golf Channel's Jay Coffin. The sweeping slice and tremendous length Watson has off the tee make his game tailor-made for Augusta, as he's proven with two wins in the past three years.
Other immensely gifted stars gunning for their first major in addition to Spieth are Henrik Stenson, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson, just to name a few. If any or some of them are in contention with some combination of Woods, Mickelson, McIlroy, Spieth or Watson, the 2015 Masters figures to be among the best ever.
An eclectic lot of winners on the PGA Tour shows how deep the competition is in modern golf. It makes Spieth's recent consistency all the more impressive, not to mention McIlroy's runaway major triumphs.
While it'd be nice to see one of the young guns claim victory, perhaps the aging legends—especially Woods—have some magic left to offer.
