Twitter Reacts to Aston Villa's Epic 3-3 Draw with Queens Park Rangers
Relegation six-pointers don't get much bigger than this.
Queens Park Rangers headed to Villa Park on Wednesday evening having snapped a five-game losing streak over the weekend. With a two-goal-margin victory over Aston Villa, Chris Ramsey's side knew they could climb out of the relegation zone and stage an unlikely escape from the Big Drop.

Arsene Wenger's finest parody didn't know how it would play out—and very few could have predicted what would unfold over 90 minutes. The crunch game was moved forward to accommodate Villa's FA Cup semi-final appearance, with many fans in the UK looking forward to settling down to watch a mouth-watering tie. But British fans were left disappointed:
"How is QPR v Villa not on tv????
— Delta Alpha Lima (@D_Les) April 7, 2015"
Prior to kick-off, there was also plenty of chatter about Villa's "Marmite" manager Tim Sherwood:
"Tim Sherwood is SO English, if you cut him Stuart Pearce pours out
— Marc Hutchy (@MarcHutchy) April 7, 2015"
"Would much rather QPR stay up and Tim Sherwood go down.
— Sam Messi (@KILLschmoods) April 7, 2015"
Within seven minutes of play, Tactic Tim's worst fears were realised when his side went a goal down to a team that had mustered just six points on the road all season:
"I couldn't be happier to see Tim Sherwood losing already
— UITS (@UpInTheStand) April 7, 2015"
"£10 on Matty Phillips first scorer at 32s allllllll day boys and girls.
— tom carlin (@carlin_thomas) April 7, 2015"
The visitors' lead, however, lasted less than three minutes as Villa stormed up the left channel, and Christian Benteke saw his deflected shot fly past Rob Green:
While celebrating the goal, Sherwood gave everyone a reason to keep talking about a particular garment he likes to wear:
"Cheeky throw of the Gilet from Sherwood pic.twitter.com/mRr2B2MgeC
— Morgs (@morgshorne) April 7, 2015"
"Tim Sherwood: Rebel Without a Gilet
— John Reid (@Zen_arcade_) April 7, 2015"
Jack Grealish started this game and repaid the faith of his gilet-less gaffer with an impressive performance in the first half. The 19-year-old earned attention for his skills, his hair and his inexplicably low socks:
"Grealish is class
— Jack McManus (@_JackMcManus) April 7, 2015"
"Grealish is running the show here
— Ben Jenkins (@Jenks321) April 7, 2015"
"Jack Grealish was forced to leave New Kids on the Block in pursuit of his football career pic.twitter.com/9ThjHrccVi
— Sam O'Reilly (@flawlessrawness) April 7, 2015"
One fan was certainly made to sweat after making an ink-based promise:
Just past the half-hour mark, Villa took the lead for the first time, but sadly for Birmingham's tattoo shops, Grealish was not involved. QPR were dispossessed during an attacking move, which resulted in Benteke running half the length of the pitch virtually unmolested before tapping in a delicate finish:
All was relatively quiet until the 55th minute, when QPR won a corner. Sherwood's side did not deem it necessary to mark veteran defender Clint Hill, nor put a man on the back post. Hence, the score became 2-2, and Hill's first-ever Premiership goal was quite a turn-up for the books:
"Congratulations to Clint Hill. The 72yr old scored his 1st Premier League goal tonight. pic.twitter.com/J2vGNRxSpN
— ByTheMin Sport (@ByTheMinSport) April 7, 2015"
"We deserve relegation for letting Clint Hill score
— Burt Macklin (@Villan16) April 7, 2015"
"We've conceded to Clint Hill. Relegate us now.
— RP (@RLPerrin_) April 7, 2015"
"Clint Hill is a Premier League left back in 2015. Just let that sink in.
— Mike Adamson (@Mikeado) April 7, 2015"
Shortly after QPR drew level, Charlie Austin was cautioned for a crunching tackle on Carlos Sanchez. The majority of fans watching seemed to feel that it was worthy of dismissal:
"That's a red card all day! Austin is very lucky
— Tim Smith (@timavfc_92) April 7, 2015"
Austin somehow stayed on the field, and he inflicted misery on the Villa Park faithful with 12 minutes remaining. The striker was given enough time and space in the box to bag his 17th goal of the season:
Plenty of Twitter users insisted that there would be more than five goals in this game, and they were proven right just five minutes later, when Benteke stepped up and completed his hat-trick with a brilliant free-kick:
"What a free kick by Benteke pic.twitter.com/8L4SEwTnIr

"Villa 3-3 QPR, and Sky decide not to put it on TV... pic.twitter.com/Zv0Aq92apt
— Footy Memes (@FootyMemes) April 7, 2015"
If there was ever proof that the most dangerous time to concede is soon after scoring, then this game was it. The Tuesday night thriller finished 3-3, putting Villa three points above the drop and helping QPR leapfrog Burnley in their quest to survive:
Clearly, Premier League fans in the homeland missed out on a treat:
