Most Dramatic Sports Moments of the Week

Garrett BakerApr 10, 2015

This past week was punctuated by the end of March Madness, but there was plenty of action around the world of sports.

While college basketball certainly grabbed the headlines, the NBA and NHL crept even closer towards the playoffs while the MLB season kicked off to add some drama of its own.

Here are the most dramatic moments from the past week in sports.

Nicklaus Hole-in-One

1 of 7

Most casual fans don't tune into the Masters until the weekend, but the Par 3 Contest is always a lot of fun.

This year, the absolute highlight was when Jack Nicklaus stepped up to the tee on the fourth hole and lofted a beautiful shot that rolled back into the hole for a hole-in-one.

What a cool moment for the 75-year-old golf legend.

Flyers-Islanders Down to the Wire

2 of 7

Division rivals Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders played in a game that only mattered for one side, New York, on Tuesday night in what turned out to be the game of the week.

Philadelphia jumped out to a three-goal lead behind two beautiful shots by captain Claude Giroux, and the Flyers took a comfortable 4-1 lead in the third period.

Then the Islanders climbed back, never giving up hope despite being down by two with two minutes to play. They ended up scoring twice to tie the game, and seemed destined for overtime.

But with three seconds on the clock, Brayden Schenn flipped the puck towards the net from just inside the blue line, and Jaroslav Halak somehow muffed it to give the Flyers a crazy win.

Smart Buzzer-Beater

3 of 7

The Toronto Raptors have already solidified their spot in the playoffs, but the Boston Celtics are still fighting their way to the postseason.

That desperation was on display against a more talented Toronto team, but the Celtics were undaunted and battled their way into overtime behind Tyler Zeller and Evan Turner's solid play.

The two teams went back and forth throughout overtime, and Boston found themselves down by a point with just seconds on the clock.

But then Isaiah Thomas found Marcus Smart with a beautiful pass, and Smart got the layup off in time to give Boston a dramatic buzzer-beater victory.

Kentucky Falls to Wisconsin

4 of 7

Kentucky had enjoyed one of the greatest college basketball seasons of all time up until Saturday night, dominating opponents en route to 38 straight wins.

But Wisconsin had other ideas, and had the score tied up at 60-60 with just a few minutes on the clock.

Sam Dekker, who has been clutch all tournament, helped lead their comeback and ensuing pull-away as the Badgers slammed the door shut behind some big shots and free throws down the line.

Pelicans Rally Against Warriors

5 of 7

In a battle between two of the biggest stars in the game, Anthony Davis and Steph Curry, Davis came up clutch en route to leading his team to victory.

The New Orleans Pelicans found themselves losing by 12 to the Golden State Warriors at halftime, but climbed their way back behind Davis's 23 second-half points.

The Warriors held a three-point lead with just under four minutes remaining in the game, but New Orleans went on an 8-0 run that put them in the driver's seat.

Curry, however, hit a three-pointer to tie up the game at 100 before the Pelicans pulled away slightly after Davis hit two free-throws.

A buzzer-beater three-pointer by Curry went in and out as time expired, sending New Orleans home with the win.

Duke Wins It All

6 of 7

After dominating Michigan State in the Final Four, Duke rolled into the title game without having to deal with much previous adversity in the tournament.

But they ran into a stingy Wisconsin team, and the Blue Devils found themselves in a bit of a hole while Jahlil Okafor and Justise Winslow got into foul trouble.

Duke rallied its way out of a nine-point hole behind some stellar play from Grayson Allen, and tied it up late before a controversial call by the refs went Duke's way.

They took it an ran with it, never looking back in the final two minutes while pulling ahead and winning by a final score of 68-63 to take the National Championship.

Senators Take Down Penguins in OT

7 of 7

The Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins both came into Tuesday night's matchup desperately needing a win to help their chances of landing in the playoffs.

Pittsburgh started off with a bang, scoring three quick goals in the first period. But the Senators added one of their own in the second before piling on two more in the third.

Each team had to be relieved to get at least one point for getting into overtime, but it was obvious from the intensity of play that they really wanted that extra point as well.

But it was Ottawa's breakout star Mark Stone who fired a beautiful shot above the glove of Marc-Andre Fleury to get that extra point for his team and inch them closer to the postseason.
