Ciro Immobile Would Be a Good Option Up Front for AC Milan

Anthony LopopoloApr 7, 2015

AC Milan could reunite one of the most potent forward partnerships in recent years.

If they go after Ciro Immobile in the summer and keep Alessio Cerci, then there it is.

Immobile has not settled in Germany, losing his starting position at Borussia Dortmund and failing to replace Robert Lewandowski. The 25-year-old Italian has just 10 goals in 26 competitive games, but he is largely a substitute in Bundesliga play.

Germany newspaper Bild (h/t Football Italia) reports that Dortmund would let Immobile go in the summer if they receive a bid of at least €15 million.

Milan are among the possible destinations. Sky (h/t Football Italia) put out a report last month suggesting that the Rossoneri had already made contact with the player's representatives. A possible change in ownership could also provide Milan with the funds to lure Immobile back to Italy in the summer.

It makes sense.

The end of the season could also spell the end of the Mattia Destro experiment, which has not worked out for either club or player.

Destro was supposed to be the solution at the No. 9 position. Instead, he has scored just twice so far for Milan and does not get involved in the game enough.

Should the Rossoneri decline to activate his €16 million buyout clause, they could go ahead and spend the equivalent (or less) on Immobile. After all, Immobile is a starter with the Italian national team and topped the Serie A scoring chart last season. He has proven himself more than Milan's current striker.

Immobile also has chemistry with Cerci, his teammate at Torino last year. The two were directly involved in 45 of the 58 goals the club scored in Serie A in 2013-14. That's 78 percent, an impressive figure to say the least.

The combination was deadly and complementary. Immobile scored all of his goals from open play, and Cerci took the penalties. Immobile moved freely in an uptempo system and Cerci racked up the assists. They knew their roles.

Right now, there is no such combo of Milan forwards, no solid formation, no consistent threat. Jeremy Menez produces the goals in a one-man show.

The next highest scorer in the Milan squad is Keisuke Honda—and he last scored in October.

A reunion between Cerci and Immobile would offer Milan the kind of two-tiered attack they are missing.

It could also spark their careers again. Cerci has also struggled to replicate his form from the previous season. He joined Atletico Madrid last summer without any proper pre-season training in Spain—a move finalized right at the end of the transfer window—and has played catch-up ever since.

Put the two together again, and they could give Milan the jump start they and the club need heading into the next campaign.
