Fiorentina vs. Juventus: Winners and Losers from Coppa Italia

Karl MatchettApr 7, 2015

Juventus crushed Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia semifinal second leg on Tuesday to book themselves a place in the final, winning 3-0 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.

Alessandro Matri scored first, and Roberto Pereyra doubled the lead before the break, wiping out la Viola's first-leg victory and giving Juve an aggregate lead. After the break, Leonardo Bonucci smashed home a third goal, before Juve's Alvaro Morata saw red.

Here are all our winners and losers from the game at the Artemio Franchi.

Winner: Alessandro Matri

It was a bit of a surprise to see Alessandro Matri get the nod to start up front ahead of Fernando Llorente, but the Italian repaid the faith in him by scoring the crucial opening goal of the match.

He had already been a danger inside the area more than once before linking with Claudio Marchisio and seeing the ball rebound his way, when an opportunistic finish saw him net his first goal in his latest spell with the club.

The rest of the match saw Matri work hard and show his usual good movement in the box, but that goal settled Juve's nerves and sent them on their way to the final.

Loser: Fiorentina's Awful Defence

It has to be said: It was a thoroughly disappointing display from Fiorentina all around.

They started well, playing at a good tempo and seeing two goals chalked off (correctly) for offside. But then their confidence and creativity waned and there was never any real inclination or determination from them to get back in the game after the first goal.

For each of the three goals, the defending was less than impressive, especially the lack of marking on the third goal for Leonardo Bonucci. The entire side has to take the responsibility for that.

Winner: Juventus' Fantastic Defence

While Fiorentina's defence was far too open and lax, Juventus' was the total opposite.

They were resolute, reliable and well-organised, strong centrally and well protected by those ahead of them. The clean sheet was their sixth in a row—Fiorentina, in the first leg of this semifinal tie, were the last side to score against them.

Leonardo Bonucci, of course, thundered in a fine volley at the other end to seal the win, which was a bonus, but it was him and his fellow defenders doing their more usual job that set the platform for this victory.

Losers: Claudio Marchisio...and Alvaro Morata?

4 of 5

Claudio Marchisio came into the second leg on a yellow card, knowing that another would rule him out of the final if his team got there. Within minutes of kick-off, he was lucky to escape a caution for a silly challenge.

If that wasn't bad enough, once Juventus were ahead and clear in the game and obviously heading for the final, Marchisio got himself unnecessarily involved with some shoving after a challenge on Alvaro Morata—and duly picked up the card that sees him suspended for the big game.

Near the end of the match, Morata saw a straight red card for a half-kick, half-poor tackle, but his suspension could be overturned if Juventus appeal—it didn't appear to be the worst challenge ever and seemed to be a harsh red card.

Winner: Mass Allegri, on for the Domestic Double...and More?

5 of 5

Huge credit has to go to Juventus manager Mass Allegri, not only for the victory on Tuesday but also for improving his side's ability to win games without their star players.

Gigi Buffon, Carlos Tevez, Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba and others were absent for the game, yet Juventus walked all over Fiorentina, who were largely poor throughout and offered little resistance—certainly nothing like in the first leg.

Allegri has guided his team into the final, where they will play either Napoli or Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on June 7. He's also on top of Serie A and clear, and has taken Juventus to the last eight of the Champions League—a great achievement so far—and there could be more to come.

James Willoughby of Goal.com quoted Allegri as saying: "It wasn't easy to win in Florence against an excellent Fiorentina side who found it tough today. Credit to the lads. Hats off to the coaches who get the lads in the right condition. We've also improved our play and move the ball around quicker."
