Why The South Eastern Conference Might Miss The BCS Championship

Kevin McGradyAug 24, 2009

While there is no doubt that the South Eastern Conference has been the strongest over the last several years, that might just be the factor that keeps them out of the BCS Bowl this year. Here is why or how that could happen.

SEC West: The football gurus have picked Alabama, LSU, Old Miss to do well in the SEC West this year. They have ignored traditional powerhouse Auburn as well as up and coming Arkansas completely writing them off to oblivion. The problem with this is Auburn was the pre-season favorite of these same gurus to win the SEC West. A team called Alabama was given no chance and predicted to loose four games. Arkansas will not loose every SEC game they play and if they win even one they are likely to affect the BCS as well as the SEC. They play Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Old Miss, Florida and LSU this season along with Mississippi State and South Carolina. It is extremely unlikely any of the Western Division Teams will go undefeated this year. I have LSU, Alabama, and Auburn contending, but, that does not matter what does matter is that a division with three traditional rivals has four this year with two much improved teams in Arkansas and Mississippi State at the bottom. Simple math tells the tale here.

SEC East: Florida and Georgia will compete with a much improved Tennessee team and South Carolina, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt are all going to have respectable teams. Florida could loose two games due to the rigors of the season. LSU and Georgia. Florida may only loose one of these, but I believe they will certainly loose one of the two. Georgia plays LSU, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt in  successive weeks. I think they are likely to loose in this stretch.

Unless a new dark horse arises I do not see any other team going undefeated in the SEC. This leaves the SEC Champion with one or two losses.

It is not only possible but probable that the PAC 10 Champion will be undefeated this year. USC and Cal are the only real contenders. I think Texas is likely to win the Big 12 undefeated or with one loss. I think Ohio State is likely to finish with one loss.

Given the BCS Formula and the likelihood of the above mentioned scenarios this could well be the year a superior SEC Team does not get the chance to prove this in the BCS Bowl.
