Liga MX: Winners and Losers from Matchday 12
Matchday 12 is over, and it was certainly one for the history books after two derbies and plenty goals.
America went back to winning ways, while UNAM secured their fourth successive victory.
Monterrey should be happy, too, as they defeated tournament leaders Tijuana to grab their fifth win of the season and fourth since Antonio Mohamed took over the team.
But not everything was smiles during the weekend. Morelia is still struggling to leave the bottom of the table, while Puebla and Leones Negros are still close to leaving the first division.
Let's take a look at the winners and losers from Week 12.
Winners: America
1 of 6
America had lost their past three games, in which they also conceded 10 goals, before Matchday 12.
The Clasico Joven seemed to be the perfect scenario to overturn the terrible results they had had against Herediano (CONCACAF Champions League), Veracruz (Liga MX) and Necaxa (friendly).
However, Cruz Azul hadn't lost to America since 2013, which put Gustavo Matosas side in a tough spot.
But Las Aguilas took advantage of the few opportunities they had, and with a powerful header from Oribe Peralta, they beat La Maquina 1-0.
Losers: Morelia
2 of 6
Morelia are at the bottom of the general table yet again.
In the 2014 Apertura, Monarcas couldn't make an impact on the pitch, either on home soil or in away matches. This season isn't different.
They started the tournament with Alfredo Tena at the helm, but after seven weeks he was sacked. Roberto Hernandez took over, but his results have been the same.
After 12 weeks, Morelia have a 1-3-8 record. Their latest defeat happened during the weekend, when they lost 0-1 to Santos Laguna.
The club will have to fight to avoid relegation.
Winner: Emmanuel Villa
3 of 6Emmanuel Villa arrived this season in Queretaro, and he's on fire.
After nine appearances, Tito has already put the ball away four times, including a brace in last weekend's 4-5 win over Leon.
Villa hadn't score more this many goals since the 2013 Clausura tournament, when he netted 13 times while playing for Tigres.
Losers: Veracruz
4 of 6
Veracruz had a great shot at taking the tournament's lead, but they couldn't keep their momentum going and lost 3-1 to Tigres.
Meliton Hernandez failed to perform as well as he had been doing and was at fault for UANL's third goal, which he failed to deflect accurately.
Tiburones Rojos are still one point away from Tijuana, and they are trailed closely by Guadalajara and America.
Winners: Monterrey
5 of 6
Monterrey secured their fourth consecutive win of the 2015 Clausura, which helped them reach the 10th spot of the general table. Last week, they sat 13th.
Rayados are slowly getting back to the level they showed in the 2014 Apertura tournament, where they reached the Liguilla.
On Saturday, they defeated Tijuana at Estadio Caliente, something no other club had done this season. The last team that snatched the win at Xolos' ground was Toluca (October 2014).
Loser: Alfonso Gonzalez
6 of 6After 90 minutes, Atlas and Guadalajara were about to leave the Clasico Tapatio with one point each, until the referee awarded a penalty for the Rojinegros.
It seemed like an imminent win. Alfonso Gonzalez asked to kick the penalty, which he did... horribly.
Ponchito tried to score with a Panenka-style chip, but he executed it poorly. Luis Michel managed to save the ball even when he was basically on the ground.
The match ended as a one-goal draw.
