NCAA Brackets 2015: Latest on President Obama and Experts' Championship Brackets

Tyler ConwayApr 6, 2015

Hey, two No. 1 seeds made it to the national championship game. That means all of our brackets should be looking pretty dang good heading into Monday night, right?

Wait, what? Kentucky wasn't one of the two that made it? [Rips paper bracket to shreds] [Throws laptop out window to avoid looking at standings] [Dumps phone in lake]

The Wildcats' loss to Wisconsin on Saturday did in nearly half of all brackets filled out on ESPN.com. The site's fantasy writer James Quintong indicated 48 percent of the millions of brackets had Kentucky winning the national championship; 58.7 percent had the Wildcats at least playing to the title game. I cannot think of a time in history where such a massive groupthink has gone wrong—especially something with so many variables like the NCAA tournament.

But, as has been the case the last few weeks, our own failures are matched by those of celebrities and the leader of the free world. With that in mind, let's take a look at the latest celebrity bracket update and wallow in our misery together.

President Barack Obama

National Percentile: 40.2 Percent

Best Pick: Dayton over Providence

Worst Pick: Title Game Participants

President Obama lost Villanova in the first weekend but held out hope Kentucky would be able to make a trip to the title game and send him rising above the 50th percentile. Those hopes were dashed Saturday when Wisconsin dashed the Wildcats' dream of a perfect season.

POTUS was pushed backward another two percent from last week and will in all likelihood finish somewhere in the upper 30s. Given President Obama's propensity for picking favorites—his brackets have long drawn tongue-in-cheek criticism for being chalk-heavy—one would have thought this would have been his perfect year.

Instead, like many, the president backed the wrong John Calipari-led horse. Oh well; he'll have one more chance to fill out a bracket as our sitting president next year. Here's to hoping that one goes a little bit better.

Jay Bilas

Best Pick: Duke to National Championship Game

Worst Pick: Kentucky to Win National Title

The Bilastrator did a pretty solid job at filling out his bracket this year, nailing three Final Four teams and even getting half the title game correct. It's just too bad his national champion wasn't part of that half. Bilas was another Kentucky backer who saw his bracket shatter thanks to Wisconsin's upset.

That said, Bilas' writeup of his bracket did foreshadow how Kentucky would fall.

"The Badgers do everything that can be debilitating for Kentucky," Bilas wrote. "They do not turn the ball over, do not foul, and they can defensive rebound. While the Wildcats can trip, I'm just not sure they can fall."

Had he been able to pull the trigger on the upset, we'd be talking about a bracket that would rank among the best, period—not just among experts.

Joe Lunardi

National Percentile: 32.0 Percent

Best Pick: Wichita State over Kansas

Worst Pick: Title Game Participants

Not much to write home about here. Lunardi's promising start of the first weekend has turned into a nightmare, as he was incorrect on three of the Final Four teams and wound up seeing his last vestige of hope in Kentucky lose.

One would never question Lunardi's skill at picking the teams that get into the tournament. This year, however, picking the teams that would win in the tournament proved to be a little too difficult. Odds are he cares much more about his high percentage on the Bracketology radar than he does picking games, though.

Kevin Hart

National Percentile: 72.0 Percent

Best Pick: UCLA to Sweet 16

Worst Pick: Title Game Participants

Look on the bright side, Kevin. Get Hard is making a ton of money at the box office. You did a dope job of hosting the Justin Bieber roast. You are literally in every movie I see advertised on television—or, at least it's seemed that way for the last 18 months. Your IMDB says you're providing a voice to a Captain Underpants movie, which is doper than dope as a child of the 1990s.

Unfortunately, winning will not translate to defeating his fellow celebrities. Hart entered Final Four weekend with as good a shot as any. He nailed three Final Four teams, and though he picked Villanova to make the title game, he had Kentucky ready to keep him atop the standings.

Whoops.

Scott Van Pelt

National Percentile: 82.0 Percent

Best Pick: Wisconsin over Kentucky

Worst Pick: Gonzaga to National Title Game

All hail SVP. While he's not currently sitting atop ESPN's celebrity standings—that distinction goes to J.A. Adande, who did everything right besides pick a national champion—Van Pelt can move up if Wisconsin is able to beat Duke on Monday.

Twenty-three brackets selected Kentucky as the national champion. Only three so much as picked Wisconsin to take down the Wildcats in the Final Four. Van Pelt and ESPN writer Jeff Goodman were the only two to select the Badgers to win the national championship. Cousin Sal Iacono, who picked Duke, is the only person other than Goodman and Van Pelt with the national champion remaining.

So kudos to you three. You're smarter than the president, Flo Rida and myself. Good luck Monday night when Wisconsin and Duke decide who will reign supreme.
