Tournament Preview

The Kolkata Knight Riders will be coming into this competition as the reigning champions after beating Kings XI Punjab in a thrilling final last year. They’ve won this tournament twice in the last three years and at their Eden Gardens stadium they are a formidable opponent.
In Gautam Gambhir they boast a classy captain and they did well to pick up the evergreen Brad Hogg—who remains a fine spinner—for the campaign. The fast bowling talents of Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav offer further variation with the ball, but given their lack of big hitters with the bat it’d be a surprise to see them retain their crown this year.

The favourites will be the Chennai Super Kings, who boast arguably the most multifaceted squad in the competition. Captaining them is MS Dhoni and up the top of the order is Brendon McCullum, who was sensational for New Zealand at the recent World Cup.
As noted by Sky Sports News HQ, the Black Caps star is a specialist in this format:
In terms of bowling the Chennai side reek of class too, with Dwayne Bravo, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohit Sharma all exceptional wicket-takers. With a core of popular Indian players—including Ashwin, Dhoni, Sharma, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja—expect the Super Kings to be the big crowd favourites.
The most entertaining side could be the Bangalore Royal Challengers. With Chris Gayle set to open the innings, Virat Kohli to come in at No. 3 and the magnificent AB de Villiers in the middle order, they look to have the strongest batting setup in the competition.

As noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo during the World Cup, De Villiers represents an intimidating proposition for opposition bowlers at the moment:
They also picked up World Cup star Mitchell Starc, but he’s set to miss the opening stages of the tournament with a knee problem. Without him, Bangalore's bowling attack does look a little weak and that could ultimately cost the Challengers as they attempt to bounce back from last season’s extremely disappointing seventh-place finish.
