Arsenal Transfer News: World-Class Stars Targeted in Easter Sunday Rumours

Matt JonesApr 4, 2015

Arsenal are ready to offer Yohan Cabaye a second crack at the Premier League, with reports suggesting the Gunners will move for the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder this summer.

According to Steve Stammers of the Sunday Mirror, Arsene Wenger will test the resolve of the French champions again after failing with a bid to sign the then Newcastle United star at the beginning of last season. It’s claimed that a £10 million offer could be enough for the Gunners to sign the French international.

Cabaye has struggled for regular minutes with the French champions.

The 29-year-old has failed to nail down a place at the Parc des Princes ever since landing a dream move to the Ligue 1 juggernauts and speaking to RMC (h/t Mark Doyle of Goal) earlier in the week, Cabaye did hint at a potential transfer should his playing time fail to improve:

"

My future is only about getting back on the pitch. There are important matches to play and an exciting end to the season in store.

We still have four competitions to play for. After that, there will be time to discuss things but, for now, my priority is to get back in shape. Anyway, I have not lost sight of one of my main goals, which is Euro 2016. This will be important and we'll see how it will unfold.

"

Given the clutch of French midfield stars currently emerging, Cabaye could find it difficult to land a place in Didier Deschamps’ squad for the next European Championships, never mind the first team. As such, it is imperative he gets back out on the pitch and some minutes under his belt whether at PSG or elsewhere.

As noted by WhoScored.com, Cabaye has only started 10 Ligue 1 games this season, but would he be much better off at Arsenal? After all, the Gunners are bursting at the seams when it comes to midfield men.

Indeed, other areas of the squad must be addressed if Wenger’s side are to mount a serious title challenge next season, per Bleacher Report’s Arsenal correspondent James McNicholas:

While Cabaye has proven he can be effective in a deeper role, his best performances for Newcastle were as an advanced midfielder, an area where Arsenal are already extremely well equipped. If the PSG man can find a team that can give him a key role in that position moving forward, we could see the career of this excellent player sparked back to life.

Gunners to Hijack Spurs’ Kevin Wimmer Switch

Wenger is set to swoop to sign Cologne’s Kevin Wimmer ahead of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Carl Eldridge of the Daily Star, the defender is poised to join Spurs in the upcoming window, but the Frenchman will make a late move for the 22-year-old knowing he still needs to add some defensive reinforcements to his squad.

The Austrian has been hugely impressive in the Bundesliga this season and his national team boss Marcel Koller recently confirmed that he will be a Premier League player soon, per Eldridge’s piece: "He moves in the summer to England. With his young age he still has potential to improve. He has it all. He is very calm—not rushed.”

Here’s how he fares in comparison to Arsenal’s first-choice defensive duo:

Interceptions per Game1.43.52.3
Clearances per Game6.65.95.9
Blocks per Game10.50.7

Spurs would still appear to be in the driving seat and given their issues at the back, they would surely be able to offer the player a lot more reassurance when it comes to first-team football. It’s apparent that the White Hart Lane outfit aren’t the only side keen on his services, though, as noted by Bleacher Report’s Sam Tighe:

The Gunners do remain a little short at the back despite the acquisition of Gabriel in January and Wenger will surely be on the lookout for another young defender in the window; calm on the ball, dynamic in his playing style and an astute reader of the game, Wimmer is a player who definitely fits the bill.

He’s by no means the finished article, but Wenger would definitely fancy his chances of moulding the Austrian's malleable talents and turning him into an excellent option to eventually replace one of the elder statesmen of the team. Stealing Wimmer from under Spurs’ noses would make any potential deal even sweeter.
