Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Latest Chatter from Both Training Camps
With less than a month left before the biggest fight in the last 20 years—and perhaps ever—takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, we're starting to get glimpses of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao's training camps.
Naturally, both fighters are trying to find sparring partners who can emulate their opponent's style. One of the partners Pacquiao has hired is MMA fighter Dashon Johnson. In the interview below with Elie Seckbach of ESNews Reporting, Johnson talks about the role he's been playing in preparing Pacquiao for the fight:
Obviously, no one can completely simulate Mayweather. If he could, he would likely be 47-0 himself and one of the richest athletes on the face of the Earth. Still, if Johnson can give Pacquiao some of the same looks, feints and tendencies, he can be of some assistance.
Likewise, in Mayweather's camp, there's only so much his sparring partners will be able to provide him in the way of emulating Pacquiao. Perhaps their job is even tougher than Johnson's because Pacquiao is such a unique fighter.
He throws punches from various angles, and he has exceptional foot and hand speed. Because of that, he's hard to time. Nonetheless, former Mayweather opponent, world champion and southpaw Zab Judah has been brought in to spar with Money.
There have been reports that Judah has gotten the best of Mayweather, per Chris Williams of Boxing News 24, but also talk that Money has continued the domination of Judah that he showed from the fifth round on back in their 2006 bout, per Jeff Mayweather, who spoke to David Mayo of MLive.com.
Perhaps it would be better to find out what Judah says about Mayweather in camp. In the video below, Judah refers to Mayweather as "The Scientist" in recognition of his technically precise ability:
The truth likely is that we won't know how either fighter is truly performing in camp until we see them in the ring on May 2. There's so much hype surrounding this bout, and there's likely much ado about nothing with some of these reports.
The myriad chatter just goes to show how big this fight is in the world of sports.
