Wood Memorial 2015 Results: Winner, Payouts and Order of Finish
Frosted won the 2015 Wood Memorial on Saturday by taking advantage of a slow pace to chase down long shot Tencendur during the homestretch. El Kabeir finished a distant third.
As one of the most notable races left on The Road to the Kentucky Derby, it was a chance for several Triple Crown hopefuls to shine. Though Frosted deserves credit for the late rally, none of the horses were overly impressive on the Aqueduct course.
Here are the payouts via the New York Racing Association:
| 1 | Frosted | $6.40 | $4.50 | $3.00 |
| 2 | Tencendur | $15.40 | $5.60 | |
| 3 | El Kabeir | $2.70 |
And here's the complete order of finish:
| 1 | Frosted |
| 2 | Tencendur |
| 3 | El Kabeir |
| 4 | Daredevil |
| 5 | Tiz Shea D |
| 6 | Toasting Master |
| 7 | Lieutenant Colonel |
Tencendur was among the horses to set a very leisurely pace during the early stages of the race. That seemingly set things up perfectly for the favored trio of Frosted, El Kabeir and Daredevil.
Yet, the race continued, and none of those horses were able to make a move. Finally, as they completed the final turn, Frosted was able to make a charge. Even so, it wasn't until the very end that he was able to pull away for the victory.
HRTV showcased the finish:
America's Best Racing passed along comments from winning trainer Kiaran McLaughlin:
Jeff Siegel of HRTV noted the lack of entertainment value:
Frosted gets the high-profile victory to bolster his Kentucky Derby resume. Tencendur put together a strong showing but just didn't have enough left in the tank for the final furlong.
Doug Salvatore of Twinspires further discussed the top two:
The main talking points coming out of this race may be what didn't happen, though. More specifically, the inability of El Kabeir and Daredevil despite the reasonable pace.
Mitch Rupert of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette didn't like the ride from C.C. Lopez:
While El Kabeir labored for most of the race and could never fully close the gap, Daredevil was in the mix but couldn't handle the distance. Neither one being an outing that builds confidence in terms of their Triple Crown prospects.
Frosted will need to run a better race on the first Saturday in May in order to win the Derby. But the closing speed is a definite positive. Working with Joel Rosario, a consistently great jockey for the past handful of years, also helps his cause.
Most importantly, a trip to Churchill Downs is now likely in his future.
