Santa Anita Derby 2015 Results: Winner, Payouts and Order of Finish

Tyler DumaApr 4, 2015

Who else but Dortmund was going to win this year's running of the Santa Anita Derby?

As a heavily-bet favorite, the Bob Baffert-trained son of Big Brown trounced the rest of the field, including second-place finisher One Lucky Dane, and Bolo who finished in third.

With another 100 points toward a spot in the Kentucky Derby, Dortmund has placed himself right up near the top of this year's points standings. Oh, and taking home the majority of the $1 million purse doesn't hurt either.

One Lucky Dane will also move on to Churchill for the Derby next month (confirmed by Baffert in a post-race interview) after earning 40 points for his second-place showing.

Meanwhile, Dortmund is quickly solidifying his claim to the title of best three-year-old.

After logging his sixth-straight victory (he's still undefeated), Dortmund looks to be the best option for the Derby next month. But, before we get to analyzing his Derby chances later this month, let's first look at arguably his best showing to date in this year's running of the Santa Anita Derby.

One Lucky Dane--$4.80$2.80
Bolo----$3.00

Recap

Last year's Derby and Preakness winner, California Chrome, won the Santa Anita Derby. This year's winner, Dortmund, looked equally strong in his victory over a short field of just six horses.

Out of the one hole, Dortmund took an odd step early on, but broke first, maintaining a lead of about a length through the first quarter in 22:46 seconds.

Dortmund maintained his length lead over a half mile in 45.36 seconds, but One Lucky Dane and Cross the Line who followed him closely.

Halfway through the turn for home, Dortmund opened up and displayed some impressive kick. When he asked, The Big Brown colt delivered, pulling away in the home stretch for a dominating win, with a time of 1:48.73.

That awkward step that I mentioned in the beginning of the recap, it proved to be an absolute non-factor as he and jockey Martin Garcia broke out for an impressive 4.5-length victory, pictured below:

Bad Read Sanchez, the other speed in the race, broke last and provided zero in the way of pressure behind him, allowing Dortmund to run practically uncontested on the front end.

Unsurprisingly, the other half of the Baffert duo, One Lucky Dane (ridden by Rafael Bejarano), figured heavily into the decision.

Not to be completely overshadowed by his stablemate, One Lucky Dane finished second by a full length over the Temple City colt, Bolo.

Dortmund's performance in this race was easily the most impressive of any of the three winners in the major Derby prep races today (those being the Wood Memorial, Blue Grass Stakes and Santa Anita Derby), and he's looking like an easy favorite for the 141st running of the Derby.
