Formula 1's Latest Rumours and Talk: Mercedes Fightback, Roberto Merhi, More

Neil JamesApr 7, 2015

Mercedes believe they have all the right tools to repel Ferrari's challenge as the 2015 Formula One season goes on, but are being forced to bring forward some development work in a bid to stay ahead.

Team boss Toto Wolff says there is no cause yet for the German manufacturer to panic, and that he is confident in the tools his staff have at their disposal.

McLaren chief Ron Dennis is also bullish about his team's future, saying he expects them to surprise people by succeeding sooner rather than later. But even in a best-case scenario, that isn't going to be for many monthsracing director Eric Boullier is more focused on the present.

Elsewhere, Roberto Merhi still has no job security at Manor, Valtteri Bottas is aiming to be back to full fitness at the Chinese Grand Prix and David Coulthard has apologised for dropping the Indian flag during a Red Bull demonstration run in Hyderabad.

Read on for a full roundup of the top stories from the last few days.

Toto Wolff Confident Mercedes Can Stay Ahead

1 of 5

Toto Wolff says Mercedes have what it takes to maintain what now looks like a smaller margin over the resurgent Ferrari team.

After being beaten by Ferrari at the Malaysian Grand Prix, the team head into the Chinese Grand Prix seeking to re-establish themselves as F1's sole front-runner. Speaking about the Scuderia's challenge, team boss Toto Wolff said: (h/t Autosport):

"

I have read an article that Ferrari were ramping up budget massively. We have everything we need. We feel confident that with the amount of resources we have, the stuff we have, we are well placed.

We just need to stay calm, continue to develop, put the right things on the car and put some things on the car earlier than we would have actually planned. But there's no reason to panic.

We are back into a normal, regular racing season where you have more than just one contender.

"

Sebastian Vettel took advantage of the SF15-T's superior tyre management to claim a shock win at the Malaysian Grand Prix. The high track temperatures played into Ferrari's handsthough quick, the Ferrari is not as fast as the Mercedes in "normal" conditions.

At races without high temperatures and significant thermal degradation of the tyres, it's hard to see them mounting a challenge.

But Ferrari have made definite progress since last year and are now closer to the Silver Arrows than anyone has been since the V6 turbo era began.

With the right development as the season progresses, they could bridge the gap and become regular challengers for race wins.

Valtteri Bottas Aiming for Full Fitness Ahead of Chinese Grand Prix

2 of 5

Valtteri Bottas says his back should be "100 percent" for the next race in China.

The Finn suffered an annular disc tear in his lower back, first feeling discomfort during qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix. Though he qualified in sixth, he was unable to start the race after the FIA medical delegate deemed him unfit to drive.

Bottas returned at the Malaysian Grand Prix with, per ESPN, a repositioned seat and pedals. Despite still being in some discomfort, he recovered well from a poor start to finish fifth.

He now hopes the two-week break between the Malaysian and Chinese rounds will have been enough for the problem to heal completely. He is quoted by Autosport, saying:

"

It was much better than Sunday in Melbourne which is good and the new driving position I had felt good. There is much less pressure on the back and now there is a two-week gap between races for a good recovery.

I am sure in China it will be 100 per cent and no problem in the future.

"

Bottas was a podium regular in 2014 and is considered one of the sport's future stars. His Williams team are currently third-quickest, but a long way behind Mercedes and Ferrari.

Having him back to full fitness can only help their bid to catch up.

Ron Dennis Aiming to Surprise Doubters with Rapid McLaren Success

3 of 5

McLaren will be back on the top step of the podium sooner rather than later, if McLaren boss Ron Dennis is to be believed.

The British team have made a woeful start to the 2015 campaign. Despite boasting what is arguably the best driver lineup on the grid, McLaren's Honda power unit has proved highly unreliable and unable to match any of its competitors.

However, there were signs the team had turned a corner in Malaysia, and Dennis says the future looks bright. He told France's L'Equipe (h/t auto123.com):

"

Both drivers were happy with the performance of the car in the fast corners and under braking at Sepang. There are many positives, even though neither we nor Honda can be satisfied, but we are working hard.

We want to win races and titles and I'm sure we will succeed sooner than people think.

"

The team's racing director Eric Boullier was a little more reserved, saying, "We are not yet in the points, but we are in front of Force India even though this is not our goal. But for now, rather than focusing on performance, we are looking at the progress we are making with respect to winter testing, and the difference is huge."

It seems wrong to have McLaren so far off the pacethey have been a fixture at or near the front of the grid for most of their 49-year history.

But by giving up the dominant Mercedes engine to begin a new partnership with Honda, the eight-time constructors' champions knew they were playing the long game.

Instant success was never on the cards, but in years to come works support from Honda should trump their old customer deal with Mercedes.

Roberto Merhi's Future at Manor Remains Uncertain

4 of 5

Manor sporting director Graeme Lowdon has indicated he is happy with Roberto Merhi's performances and hinted there are no immediate plans to replace him, but the driver is still looking to the short term.

The Spaniard was announced as a driver for Manor, formerly Marussia, less than a week before the start of the season. The team said on their Facebook account that he would drive for them "in the opening rounds of the 2015 season."

The statement implied he was a temporary seat-filler until a well-backed pay driver could be acquired, but such a driver has not yet materialised. Speaking to Autosport, Lowdon said:

"

We ran Roberto in 2009 in European F3 and we were really impressed with him. He did a great job and we have always had an eye on him.

We want to bring new talent through and we have done that but we have to do whatever is right for the team at the end of the day. At the moment, what is right for the team is the set-up we have. Roberto did a top class job [in Malaysia].

There's not hard and fast rules or whatever when it comes to anything, other than focusing on what is right for the team.

"

Merhi, however, isn't counting his chickens and remains unsure if he'll even be driving at the next grand prix. He is quoted by Spain's Diario Sport (h/t grandprix.com), saying of his chances of racing in China, "It is not yet official but everyone in the team is sure I will be on track. I have been very impressed that the team trusts me even if I have no support or sponsor."

Though officially remaining loyal to Merhi in public, Manor must be working behind the scenes to try to find a driver who will bring much-needed funds to the team.

But finding someone who is willing to pay millions of pounds to drive around several seconds off the pace is proving difficultsurprisingly so, given the hidden benefits.

Any driver who competes in five or more races in 2015 is eligible for a super licence in 2016, even if he lacks the necessary 40 qualifying points (per page 23 of Appendix L to the International Sporting Code, pdf) under the new system. The second Manor seat could qualify three drivers (including Merhi) in this way by the end of the year.

For a well-backed hopeful with a poor racing recordor a good record in the wrong seriesit could be his only shot.

David Coulthard Apologises After Indian Flag Error

David Coulthard has apologised after accidentally dropping the Indian flag on the floor during a Red Bull demonstration run in Hyderabad.

The Scot, veteran of 246 F1 race starts, had been driving one of the team's old cars on the city's Tank Bund Road. Per ibnlive.com, he then went to get into a Red Bull-liveried road car to be taken on a drive, accidentally dropping the flag to the floor.

A member of the support crew quickly picked it up and handed it back to Coulthard.

In many countriesfor example, Coulthard's native United Kingdoma fallen flag wouldn't be a problem. But in India, the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1971 (pdf) and subsequent amendment covers how the national flag should be treated.

According to the Act, anyone "allowing the Indian National Flag to touch the ground or the floor or trail in water intentionally" faces "imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both."

Coulthard didn't do it on purpose, so he appears to have avoided a breach of the law, but he nonetheless apologised, telling press:

"

I must apologise for dropping the flag...from my point of view we don't have this tradition or rule in our country. So, I would never disrespect the country and I would never disrespect the flag.

So, I hope you understand that I can only act as to what is normal for me and according to the rules in my country. I am really sorry, I cannot know the rules of every country. So, apologies to your nation. I have tremendous respect for India and respect for the flag and the people.

"

Video of the incident, highlighting the driver's mistake, was posted to ABN Telugu's YouTube channel.
