NCAA Tournament 2015: Complete Odds and Predictions for the Final Four

R. Cory SmithApr 3, 2015

Two straight weeks filled with over 60 games spit out just four programs. Each team in the Final Four has trudged through that massive bracket to get to this point and is now just two more wins away from a national championship.

It seemed predetermined before the NCAA tournament started that Kentucky would win the title. Remaining undefeated up until this point, the Wildcats will need another flawless performance to earn another victory over Wisconsin in the Final Four.

On the other side of the bracket, Michigan State has gone on yet another insane run under Tom Izzo. The Spartans will look to continue that winning streak when they match up with No. 1 seed Duke. Ironically enough, the only losses for MSU in March were to Wisconsin, the team it might meet in the title game.

Breakdown: Duke vs. Michigan State

Quick, pick a coach to lead your program: Mike Krzyzewski or Tom Izzo. There's really no wrong answer here, which is what makes the opening matchup so intriguing.

Coach K has four national titles and is now in his 12th Final Four of his career. Izzo, on the other hand, has one title and seven semifinals appearances. Krzyzewski's historic run of Final Four appearances puts him in illustrious company, per ESPN College Basketball:

One reason why Krzyzewski has enjoyed so much success has been his adaptation to the changing style of the game. Once a coach who developed players like J.J. Redick, Jay Bilas and Johnny Dawkins over the years, he now has likely one-and-done stars such as Jahlil Okafor and Justise Winslow leading the way.

However, Coach K still has his senior leader in Quinn Cook to control the game. The point guard has enjoyed his best season with the Blue Devils as a senior and is playing in his first Final Four.

Not only has he been phenomenal on the offensive end with 14.5 points and 2.5 assists per game in the tournament, but Krzyzewski believes Cook's best asset lately has been his defense.

"Quinn may have been the most valuable player down there because of what he did defensively. … All of a sudden it (defense) became really important. And thank goodness it did," Krzyzewski said, via Powell Latimer of The News & Record.

Cook's defense will be crucial against Michigan State, which has weapons all over the floor. In particular, Travis Trice, a senior who's averaged 19.8 points and four assists per game, will be the true test for Cook.

Both seniors want a shot at a national title, but only one will get it. With Cook's weapons and the entire team at the top of its game, only one team can stop Duke during its run to the championship game. That team is Kentucky—the program they'll face in the final game.

Duke will prevail to move Coach K to a 9-1 record against Izzo in their illustrious careers. What lies ahead, however, is the toughest test of the Blue Devils' season.

Prediction: Duke 68, Michigan State 62
