Confessions of a Solheim Cup Watcher

Tom EdringtonAug 24, 2009

Have a major confession.

Sat in front of the television and actually watched the final day of the Solheim Cup.

Yes, believe it or not, I watched women's golf on television.

You can perhaps blame it on my misguided youth.

Back in the late '60s the best female high school golfer in northern Virginia came to our club and we played 18 holes. I was one-over for the round and got dusted. She shot 68, four-under-par.

Was the first time I payed attention to women's golf.

Many years ago, a young sports writer was covering an LPGA event in St. Petersburg, FL. There was a rookie on the tour named Nancy Lopez. First round was rained out and he invited Lopez to go to lunch at Burger King. More exposure to women's golf.

It was a great time, that day at Burger King. Lopez went on to become the best on that tour and I went on to have far too many meals at Burger King.

Fast-forward to Sunday.

And this confession:  Watching the girls was really, really entertaining.

Christina Kim reminded me of a best friend's little sister, the one with way too much enthusiasm and was a little on the crazy side.

Kim couldn't have been more entertaining. She couldn't have been more excited, she couldn't have been more involved with the crowds. Thought to myself that this was a pretty good moment for women's golf.

And there was Paula Creamer, who reminds us of that saucy sorority girl from by-gone days who everyone wanted to date but was always booked solid. Get in line, try again next year.

She was solid as were most of the young contingent of fired-up Americans.

There they were resplendent in face paint and good golf shots, fist pumps, high fives and hand slaps for the spectators as they headed for the next tee.

This was way too much fun for golf.

And at last, a young talent may have found her place on the LPGA Tour. It has been a miserable journey for Michelle Wie. She has been hounded by her father's declarations that she was so good, that she'd compete and beat the men, that she was too good for the women's tour.

With her father finally vanquished from the forefront, she has fit in nicely with her peers and is content to find her way among the best women's players. It's where she belongs and she's finally one of the gang. Before, she was every woman's target of resentment.

Not now.

She was there, getting fired up, winning matches, as did Kim and Creamer and Morgan Pressel and the rest of these young rascals.

The future of the LPGA was on display and whooping it up.

They won and they won big.

And they had fun, a lot of fun.

And I confess, I watched them, and enjoyed it.

Forgive me.
