Major League Baseball: The Top 5 Home Run Hitters at The Current Moment

Bob RandleAug 24, 2009

Ever since the steroids saga started, I sometimes have wondered if the guys who are hitting the most home runs and RBI are also some of the unfortunate people who decided to take performance enhancing drugs. Cases such as the 2001 season, when Mark Mcgwire, Barry Bonds, and Sammy Sosa each hit 60+ home runs, but a few years later all were indicted for using PE drugs.

Other cases include Alex Rodriguez, who was using steroids when he was with the Texas Rangers from 2001-2003, and hit 156 home runs and 395 RBI in the process. Another case is when David Ortiz used PEDs during 2003 and possibly 2004 but he claims they were supplements/vitamins. Manny Ramirez also failed in 2003 but was not suspended until 2009, when was suspended for using hCG, a women's fertility drug used by steroid users to restart their body's natural testosterone production as they come off a cycle of steroids. He was suspended 50 games.

Now we look at the top five home run hitters in the MLB at the current moment.

1. Albert Pujols. He has been very consistent hitting home runs even when he first entered baseball. Hitting 30+ homers and 100+ RBI in his first nine seasons, including this season, making me think that he is just that good. I prefer saying that he is a good guy, after all he does a lot for his community and he is a nice guy according to people who have talked to him. I'm hoping that he isnt one of them because he really makes the fans love him for being the nice charitable guy that he is.

2. Mark Reynolds. This guy surprises me in many ways because of his home run production but then last season set the record for most strikeouts in a single season with 204. If it wasn't for the fact that he strikes out very frequently, he could be a great player. The stats show it, 83 home runs to this day and 503 strikeouts. Strikeouts kill this guy he averages a strikeout every 1.31 games, which isn't good.

3. Carlos Pena. Like Mark Reynolds, strikeouts kill him, but his home run production is better than Reynolds, and his strikeouts not as frequent. It's a little bit better but still saying that strikeouts kill him is a must. 111 home runs and 456 strikeouts, which is an average of a strikeout every 0.89 games which isn't good either. He has the problem of hitting at a low average (.220 at the current moment).

4. Adam Dunn. I always was a big fan of Adam Dunn but he had the same excessive strikeouts problem. However he's got an impressive feat of getting 40+ homers and 100+ RBI in  the past five seasons. 120 home runs and 523 strikeouts. But if you look at this season, in which he hopefully gets to 40 home runs and 100 RBI (he's currently at 33 home runs and 89 RBI's), there is something that he hasn't done at all in his career, have a good batting average. His highest in a season is .266 and his lowest is .215. This season's average is at .288 and will probably go down, but it's still impressive.

5. Prince Fielder. Son of Cecil Fielder, Prince has had a great start to his career hitting an impressive 50 home runs and 119 RBI in 2007. This year he has been better, currently batting .303 with 33 home runs and 110 RBI. He'll have a great career if he can hit consistently (which is what he is doing now) and keeps it up.
