NCAA Tournament 2015: Predictions, Odds for Saturday's Final Four Matchups

Rob GoldbergApr 2, 2015

The Final Four is always among the most heavily bet on events in sports, putting it near the same category as the Super Bowl. This will only be exaggerated for this year's highly anticipated games.

As opposed to last season's national semifinals that featured lower-seeded teams and plenty of surprises, No. 7 Michigan State is the only real shocker of the remaining squads. Otherwise, fans could have expected to see No. 1 seeds Kentucky, Duke and Wisconsin.

This results in a lot more familiarity with the teams and likely a lot more action across the board. If you still have questions about where to place your bets, however, here is a breakdown of the smartest picks for the weekend.

Duke (-5) over Michigan State

SYRACUSE, NY - MARCH 27: Denzel Valentine #45 of the Michigan State Spartans celebrates with teammate Travis Trice #20 after defeating the Oklahoma Sooners 62 to 58 during the East Regional Semifinal of the 2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at the Ca

Michigan State had a dramatic run to the Final Four, overcoming early-season struggles to play its best basketball down the stretch.

Magic Johnson had high praise for the coaching job in this tournament:

With the Spartans playing great team defense along with Travis Trice taking over on the offensive end, they seem to have a chance against any opponent.

Unfortunately, this squad hasn't seen an offense quite like Duke in this tournament. The attack centers around freshman Jahlil Okafor, who ESPN's Chad Ford noted is advanced for his age:

The center was limited against bigger opponents like Utah's Jakob Poeltl and Gonzaga's Przemek Karnowski, but Michigan State doesn't have anyone who can match up at this level. If the squad chooses to double-team him, it will simply create open opportunities for Quinn Cook and Tyus Jones in the backcourt.

Amazingly, the squad has been even better lately with Justise Winslow grabbing rebounds and leading fast breaks. This will make the Blue Devils even tougher to defend.

Considering Duke has improved on the defensive end after struggling all season, the squad should be able to pull away against Michigan State and cover the spread with a relatively easy victory.

Wisconsin (+5) over Kentucky

No one has been able to beat Kentucky all season, as the talented squad enters the Final Four 38-0. However, certain opponents have been able to keep it close.

A handful of teams were able to keep the deficit within single digits, while Notre Dame only fell by two in the Elite Eight. Interestingly, Wisconsin utilizes a similar playing style to the Irish with the ability to spread the floor with shooters all around.

Notre Dame did about as well offensively against the Kentucky defense as anyone in the nation this season. Interestingly, KenPom.com currently ranks that offense as the No. 2 unit in the country behind, you guessed it, Wisconsin.

ESPN's John Gasaway broke down how well the Badgers performed against another elite defense with a great frontcourt in the Elite Eight:

Frank Kaminsky, Sam Dekker and others have the ability to score against an otherwise immovable defense. Adding this to a slow-tempo game should keep things close throughout.

Although Kentucky has proven throughout the season the ability to blow out top opponents, this will be the best team it has faced all year long. Even if the Wildcats win, Wisconsin should be able to cover the spread.
