Moves PSG Should and Should Not Make in the Summer Transfer Window

Andrew GibneyMar 31, 2015

It might be something that has been said every year since Qatar Sports Investments took over the club, but this will be a hugely important summer for Paris Saint-Germain.

As PSG look to continue their push towards Europe's elite, Laurent Blanc and the powers that be need to have a serious look at the squad. It is not only important to strengthen in certain areas but also to clear out players who are no longer pulling their weight or living up to previous expectations.

Here are some moves that Paris Saint-Germain should and should not make in the summer transfer window.

One Superstar Signing

Any recent summer wouldn't be complete without PSG making at least one big-name signing. There will be plenty of targets banded around, but there are few names that would make an instant impact at the Parc des Princes.

One of the biggest names is Juventus and France superstar Paul Pogba. Without breaking down the specific finances and knowing who PSG will sell, or even whether or not they could match the Italian club's asking fee, there is no way to guarantee he will leave. Successful or not, it’s a move that PSG need to make.

There is no certainty he would even join the Parisian club, but as a home-grown option and a kid who was born relatively close to the capital, it would be an attractive prospect for all parties.

Not only would Pogba make PSG a much better team on the pitch, but they would have another superstar, one who would help build the club’s brand to the next level, taking them forward for the next five years. For a club like PSG, that two-way success is invaluable.

Time to Cast off the Deadwood

Blanc is the third manager of the QSI era, and over that time, the club has amassed a varied squad. It is a squad that has a few players outstaying their welcome or not fulfilling the potential that brought them to the club in the first place.

Ezequiel Lavezzi's inability to convert the high number of chances he is given this season will likely see him leave the club in the summer. With only four goals this season, interest from Liverpool, per The Telegraph in January, could spark a summer move, and any offer around the £10 million mark would be enough to see him exit the Parc des Princes.

Veteran midfielder Thiago Motta has also endured a tough season. Unable to rise to the standard he set last season, his place is no longer guaranteed.

PSG's midfield, when Motta and Marco Verratti are played together, lacks dynamism and pace. Verratti can now do Motta's job as well as his own. It would make sense to let the older Italian leave the club in the summer.

Time to Find a New Home for Ibrahimovic

Although his contract is up at the end of the 2015/16 season, this summer could be the ideal time for PSG to end their relationship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and usher in a new era.

The Swede may be the club's top scorer this season, but that says more about the inability of other players to find the net than the merits of the forward’s current ability. Injuries and unpleasant incidents have been the story of the season, and with his mouth causing more problems than his feet are solving on the pitch, he is not the marquee draw he used to be.

Removing Zlatan’s salary off the wage bill and receiving a transfer fee would help the club move forward and build towards a brighter future. Another 12 months of Ibrahimovic may do the long-term future of the club more harm than he will possibly be able to save once another year older.
