Austin had a resurgent season of sorts with the Cleveland Browns in 2014, catching 47 passes for 568 yards and two touchdowns over the span of 12 games.
Injuries have prevented Austin from performing to his potential in recent years—mostly nagging hamstring problems. It's therefore no surprise that he's landing in Philadelphia.
As he's proven by retaining DeMeco Ryans and trading for Kiko Alonso and Sam Bradford, Eagles coach and personnel chief Chip Kelly isn't shying away from injured players. The difference with Austin is that he might not have much left in the tank at this point.
A couple of factors to bear in mind, though: Last year was a productive one for Austin despite catching passes mostly from Brian Hoyer, who regressed as the season wore on. Kelly's offense tends to allow skill players to shine, so Austin may be landing in the perfect situation.
This is an interesting move by Philadelphia, bringing in a longtime Dallas Cowboy in Austin to help take back the NFC East title from America's Team.
The Eagles have second-year wideouts in Jordan Matthews and Josh Huff expected to contribute in the passing game, along with Riley Cooper. There is thus a real chance for Austin to contribute in a big way.
Bradford's health will go a long way in determining how Philadelphia's offense operates in 2015. Whether it's Bradford, Mark Sanchez or someone else throwing the majority of passes, there ought to be at least one more reliable target in Austin to count on—provided he can avoid injuries in his own right.
