John Terry's Contract Extension Outlines His Continued Brilliance at Chelsea

Garry HayesMar 26, 2015

Jose Mourinho is no fool.

The Chelsea boss knows what has got him to the top in world football, and he also understands what will keep him there: players with substance.

At Stamford Bridge, they come no more substantial than John Terry.

It seems a rather simplistic view of the game, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Knowing what makes a great player is the easy part, but spotting it and maintaining it is where intellect proves the difference.

That’s part of the genius of Mourinho. For him, it’s about much more than being a footballer. The Chelsea boss demands something different from his players, most notably that intangible quality we call "character."

Terry personifies that—it’s the reason Mourinho has been so eager to reward him with another one-year contract extension to keep him at Stamford Bridge beyond this summer, according to Chelsea's official site.

Too often this season, Mourinho has seen his team struggle in matches when they’ve been under pressure. Whether it be the weight of expectation or a dominant opponent, Chelsea haven’t always had the look of the "Invincibles" tag the media was so eager to put on them in the early stages of the campaign.

Those moments of breathtaking brilliance we’ve witnessed from this Chelsea team have been a sign of how far they can go in the coming seasons. Equally, those occasions of weakness have underlined that Mourinho’s little horse has some maturing to do before it becomes the rampaging stallion he craves.

The manager is the leader from the sidelines, Terry his general on the pitch.

Mourinho has been back in west London for close to two years, and as he surveys his dressing room, he knows one vital ingredient is still lacking.

Chelsea have the exquisite talents of Eden Hazard and their other flair players and a bit of grit from the likes of Nemanja Matic. But leadership? The boss still hasn’t found it beyond Terry.

It’s why the captain remains at the heart of what Mourinho is building. Age isn’t a factor. It’s about creating longevity, instilling belief in those around him and until the project is complete. There’s no better candidate to lead this Chelsea team.

Indeed, it’s telling that we’re barely into the final quarter of the Premier League campaign and Terry has already been signed up for another season.

Mourinho is planning for next year, and without his captain and leader, he would have had to restructure his entire approach.

At 34, there are still few who can top Terry.

What he possesses comes at a premium, as the dividend far outweighs the investment. He doesn’t just exude self-belief; it’s infectious. He administers it to others.

Mourinho often speaks of his desire to build a dynasty in west London that will someday rival Sir Alex Ferguson’s achievements at Manchester United.

He wants to make Chelsea a sustainable powerhouse. Terry’s presence is going to help do that as the next generation of players emerge, principally the likes of Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen in defence.

In their captain, those youthful talents see the right example; every day they see a beacon of what it takes to be a Chelsea player, a Mourinho player.

Speaking to the Chelsea website after his contract extension was announced, Terry confirmed the very thing we all know Mourinho relishes about him.

"First and foremost it’s hunger, hard work and wanting to win," he said, pinpointing what has seen him maintain his importance to Chelsea. "The manager has had a big part to play in that with his honesty, saying, 'Play well and stay in the team; if not, there will be other players who come in.'"

Right now, there isn’t any need for the latter option. Terry’s setting the standard at Stamford Bridge—to the Premier League’s detriment.

With Terry leading Chelsea out for another 12 months, Mourinho’s team will continue to stride forward in the pursuit of dominating English football.

His contract extension only serves to confirm his continued brilliance.
