Joe Cox Just Can't Win For Waiting
Years of loyalty, a comeback victory, and dynamic leadership have bought UGA's fifth year senior quarterback, Joe Cox, the confidence of his teammates and coaches, but apparently not the confidence of Georgia's fans.
He has waited, waited, and waited some more. Even though he has posted good numbers in his appearances over the past three seasons (33-58, 432 yds, 5 td, 1 int, 144.9 efficiency rating), many bulldog fans are clamoring for Logan Gray or even for true freshmen Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger. Anyone but Cox seems to be the cry of Georgia fans. Even as I was beginning this paragraph a Georgia fan leaned over my shoulder and offered his own derogatory input on the skills of Joe cox. And even my own family who are life-time Georgia fans are sure they would rather have Gray or Murray than cox.
Why are Georgia fans so despondant with their team's quarterback situation? The truth is... I have no idea. Some viewpoints I can understand and still disagree with, but i just don't understand the logic behind these fan's arguements. Don't get me wrong I can understand being nervous about a still un-proven and slightly inexperienced quarterback. What I cant understand is why Georgia fans are shouting the praises of even more un-proven and inexperienced quarterbacks. Sure Logan Gray is probably more athletic than Cox, but he hasn't thrown a single pass, that's right not a single pass in any game that mattered in his three years on campus. Why would we start him again?
As for Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger, just think back to the last time Georgia started a true freshman quarterback.
In 2006, with D.J. Shockley departed ( a fifth year senior qb who had great success), Georgia tried Joe Tereshinski. When that didn't work Mark Richt opted for true freshman Matthew Stafford. And even the now No. 1 draft pick struggled throwing just 7 touchdowns compared to 13 int's while completing only 52.7 pct of his passes. If a future No. 1 draft pick struggled as true freshman, I doubt anyone Georgia brings in for a while will be able to do much better.
All i'm saying is why are we clamoring for unproven players when we have a guy who, besides his well above average play on the field (which includes a 13 point 4th quarter come-from-behind win), has won the unquestioned confidence of his coach and teammates. If the guys who have to go to war between the sidelines with him every weekend believe he can get the job done then so should we.
You can drool over Gray, Murray, and Mettenberger all you want but Joe Cox is the man for the job. And I have this sneaky feeling that at the end of the year there will be quite a few more people standing in Joe Cox's corner
