Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns: Winner and Reaction from WWE WrestleMania 31
After months of dominance, Brock Lesnar’s run with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship came to an end Sunday night at WrestleMania 31 as he dropped the title to Seth Rollins.
Rollins arrived in the middle of the match between Lesnar and Roman Reigns and cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase. He then defeated Reigns to become the new World Heavyweight champion:
ESPN's Dan Rafael detailed the chaos after Rollins won:
It was a main event that lived up to everyone's expectations, and as ESPN's Dan Szymborski put it, everyone looks good moving forward:
Lesnar has been the most dominant force in wrestling over the past year since ending The Undertaker's vaunted undefeated streak at WrestleMania XXX. He also decimated John Cena to win the title at SummerSlam, but he was unable to add Reigns to his list of victims.
And this match was no different, with plenty of F5's, suplexes and more, with WrestleZone detailing one particular memorable moment:
Many were resigned to the notion that Reigns would beat Lesnar for the championship when he won the Royal Rumble match in January. There was plenty of resistance to Reigns as the next face of WWE, which led to mixed reactions on a weekly basis.
The prevailing thought was that Reigns was either not ready for or undeserving of the top spot in the company, although Scott Fishman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel pointed out the former Shield powerhouse's knack for eliciting a response:
There is no question that Reigns entered WrestleMania as the favorite, but there was a definite shift leading up to the event when Lesnar announced that he had re-signed with WWE, per SportsCenter:
Since there was no longer any question of The Conquerer leaving the company for UFC, retaining the title became a more viable option.
That, coupled with Paul Heyman espousing the virtues of Lesnar, made things a bit more uncertain.
Heyman told anyone who would listen last year that Lesnar would beat The Undertaker and end the streak. Few believed it could happen, but it shockingly came to fruition.
The sharp-tongued advocate made a similar declaration on the Raw prior to WrestleMania 31, according to WWE's official Twitter account:
Heyman also made it clear that Lesnar essentially intended to embarrass Reigns at the Showcase of Immortals, per WWE Universe:
He wasn’t so prophetic this time around, which sets up an extremely interesting post-WrestleMania scenario.
Lesnar leaving WWE is no longer a possibility, but it is anyone's guess how The Beast will be handled in the coming months.
One can only assume that Lesnar will take a break from WWE programming due to his contract, but he must continue to be built as a dominant force despite the loss.
If Lesnar is truly out of the picture for now, it's not like the company is without options. Rollins has ready-made feuds with Reigns and Randy Orton available at a moment's notice. Both could be compelling and engaging.
There are arguably more questions than answers following WrestleMania 31, and that may ultimately be a good thing in terms of generating interest for the product moving forward.
