Bron Breakker Was Originally Set to Win WWE Royal Rumble, Why HHH Changed to Roman Reigns Revealed

Before Roman Reigns won the Royal Rumble to earn a title shot at WrestleMania 42, WWE had plans for Bron Breakker to get the biggest victory of his career in the 30-man match.

On the new season of WWE Unreal that dropped on Tuesday, it was revealed that Breakker was discussed as winning the Rumble before Triple H decided against it in part due to fear of fan backlash toward the young superstar getting this big of a push.

"So the risk with Bron Breakker is everything from, can he actually do it? Can he mentally handle it? Will fans accept it," Triple H says in a talking head segment. "So you have to really be sure."

There's also a moment in the writers room where Triple H discussed it as fans feeling like they were "shoving him down your throat" when talking about Breakker.

A lot of the WrestleMania plans were adjusted to Seth Rollins' shoulder injury suffered in October that left his status for the marquee event unclear.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported in February the original plan for Breakker was to lose to CM Punk in their world heavyweight title match on the Jan. 5 episode of Raw, win the Rumble and defeat Punk in a rematch at WrestleMania for the championship.

After Rollins' injury, Reigns and Cody Rhodes became the top two choices to win the Rumble, with Reigns getting the win and going on to defeat Punk for the championship at WrestleMania.

The justification for not going with Breakker appears to stem in part from the backlash in 2015 when Reigns infamously won the Rumble and was booed out of the building in Philadelphia so much that the people turned on The Rock when he came out as a surprise.

Of course, the reason Reigns was booed 11 years ago is because Daniel Bryan was making his big return to the ring in the Rumble after missing most of 2014 due to a neck injury and he was almost immediately eliminated.

There was no Bryan-type figure in this year's Rumble that would lead the crowd to turn against Breakker. Even if fans did boo him, he's supposed to be a heel.

One reason fans in 2026 have been critical of WWE the same people have been on top for years at this point with seemingly not much effort given to building up new, younger talent, particularly in the men's division.

If WWE wanted to avoid the perception of shoving Breakker down the throat of fans, the adjusted plans really haven't done anything to help him eventually become a top star.

Breakker entered the Rumble at No. 2, lasted 10 seconds with Oba Femi and was eliminated. He appeared at WrestleMania but didn't work a match due to a hernia suffered in February that kept him off television for two months.

Given the injury to Breakker, it wound up maybe working out that he didn't win the Rumble because plans may have had to change again.

The downside, though, is that Breakker is now currently being positioned on television as the least important member in this latest iteration of The Vision behind Austin Theory and Maxxine Dupri.
