Angels Reportedly Fire 'The Baseball Spy' Scout After Filming Rockies Coaches from Stands

The Los Angeles Angels fired one of their pro scouts who gave himself the moniker "The Baseball Spy" earlier this season after it was revealed he filmed members of the Colorado Rockies coaching staff with his cell phone while sitting in the stands.

Per The Athletic's Brittany Ghiroli and Sam Blum, the Rockies reported the incident, which occurred at some point prior to a Rockies-Angels series at Angel Stadium from June 1-3, to MLB and the scout, whose real name is Justin Prinstein, was fired after the league alerted the Angels front office:

"While seated in a section at Coors Field designated for scouts, he was spotted filming coaches on his phone during a game by a member of the Rockies organization. While scouts filming is generally considered a legal practice, using technology to steal or decode signs is not allowed."

The report noted then-Angels general manager Perry Minasian fired Prinstein "right away" and apologized to the Rockies front office, adding both organizations "believe" he was acting on his own.

There is no indication the Angels will face any discipline from MLB.

Prinstein's LinkedIn page notes he was hired as an evaluator and analyst by the Angels in December. He previously worked in the scouting department for the Cincinnati Reds (2019 to '23), Baltimore Orioles (2013 to '18) and as a European scout for the Houston Astros (2009 to '11).

Per The Athletic, MLB scouts from four different organization said "there's no legal reason to film during a game since today's televised broadcasts offer a plethora of angles and teams possess the technology to upload and analyze those as they see fit."

Ghiroli and Blum noted Prinstein didn't respond to multiple interview requests and locked his X account following attempts to contact him last week.

The Rockies played a home series against the San Francisco Giants from May 29-31 after a seven-game road trip against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Colorado won two out of three games against the Angels at Angel Stadium.
