No Slap on the Wrist For You Brock, You Get Carwin's Heavy Right Hand
I’m not sure if the UFC is punishing Brock or rewarding Carwin. Either way we are looking at a title bout that could be one of the biggest in the UFC.
That’s a tall feat, biggest in history. Well it definitely will be statistically. With two fighters coming in at over 245, and one fighter being 6’3 while another is 6’4. These boys definitely ate their vegetables growing up.
Let’s get down to business. Shane Carwin is Brock’s first true test inside the octagon. You can deny it all you want but neither Frank Mir nor Randy Couture ever stood much of a chance against Brock.
Frank Mir used Brock’s inexperience against him and ultimately made Brock the dangerous heavyweight he is today. Brock's past three fights have been dominating victories.
Randy couldn’t handle the mass of Brock and never really got an offense going. Brock demolished an MMA legend.
Frank, well at least Frank showed up. Everyone knew that there was no way Frank would beat Brock. Now I’ll give Frank credit, he came into the fight looking better than ever, but ultimately it was Brock’s muscle that beat him.
This won’t be the case with Shane Carwin. Shane Carwin is a big guy, not quite the overall size of Brock but he is a stacked heavyweight.
He is a NCAA wrestling champion and a All-American in to sports. He’s undefeated in MMA competition and let’s also keep in mind that he has yet to spend a full round in the octagon.
Let me make sure you understand me clearly he has not spent an accumulative total of a round in the octagon. In his three fights he has spent a total time of 3:44. Let me add another impressive feat to the list.
With the exception of his first fight he has yet to have a fight last over the two minute mark in the first round. Far more dominant than Brock has been. In Brock's four fights he has been in a fight a total of 22 minutes. Carwin has 11 fights and has only spent 12 minutes, I guess Brock has more ring experience.
Now we’ve all seen Carwin’s knockout power in the octagon but few know that he has racked up quite a few submissions as well. Five of his eleven wins have come by submission.
This fight is proof that the UFC will not treat Brock how EliteXC treated Kimbo. They see a true contender in Carwin. That’s why they removed Velasquez out of the picture.
Velasquez is good but he has no chance at out wrestling Brock. If Velasquez was to beat Carwin, then Brock would have another opponent he could walk right through. The fact that they are willing to throw such a challenge at Brock and risk him losing the title shows how serious the UFC is about challenging their champions.
If Brock gets knocked out by Carwin, they’ve got a relatively unknown heavyweight holding the belt. Yet they are still willing to risk it because Carwin is the best fight for him.
Both of them are former NCAA wrestling champions, both are powerful heavyweights, and both have something to prove here.
Brock needs to show people that if he wins the fight he can be a humble champion not a jerk who still wants to cut WWE promos.
Carwin has a lot more to prove though. He called out Brock for his antics. Not only that his UFC victories could be called flukes, he only fought one quality opponent in Gabe Gonzaga. If he knocks Brock out in the first round, what can anyone say.
Maybe Brock isn’t going to be the most dominant heavyweight ever. That may just be a title held for the man standing across from him at UFC 106.
