Payton Comments on Brees Trade Rumors

Wednesday, March 25

Saints head coach Sean Payton spoke about trade rumors linking Brees to a potential move out of New Orleans, via Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports:

"

What do you do when there's no truth to any of it? Not one iota. We're in an age where we see speculative reporting. ... We'll go nuts if we respond. So tune it out. ... He's a part of where we're going. He and I have dialogue each week.

Payton also commented on a story linking Brees to the New York Jets, via Marc Sessler of NFL.com:

GM Loomis Says Brees Is Not on Trade Block

Monday, March 23

General manager Mickey Loomis told Jim Corbett of USA Today Sports that the team has no intention of shopping Brees.

"Anybody who thinks we're trading Drew Brees, that's just not true," Loomis said.

Brees, 36, has two years remaining on his contract. He will cost $26.4 million against the salary cap in 2015, second behind only Tony Romo. While that may lead some to believe Brees is a candidate for a trade, his contract structure makes that almost impossible.

The Saints would owe $33.5 million in dead cap space if they were to trade or release their Pro Bowl quarterback. In essence: It would cost them more than $7 million to get rid of Brees than to keep him. With that dead money dropping down to $7.4 million in 2016, the most reasonable assumption is that New Orleans will hold onto Brees for one more year before reassessing its situation.

Brees threw for 4,952 yards and 33 touchdowns against 17 interceptions last season, his ninth with the Saints.
