Vikings Edge Out Chiefs 17-13, Tarvaris Throws For Two Touchdowns
Coming into tonight's game I anticipated that the Vikings would immediately come out and completely and utterly destroy the Chiefs to no end. To my surprise, I was quite wrong about my prediction.
The Chiefs came out and scored 3 easy points with a Ryan Succop 32-yard field goal attempt. After one quarter in the books, Kansas City had a 3-0 lead over the Vikings.
Only four minutes into the second quarter, Kansas City once again marched the ball down the field. This time they scored on a touchdown from Matt Cassel to his number one target, Dwayne Bowe.
Kansas City took a ten point lead as they were shutting out Minnesota.
Minnesota went on to score a touchdown with 2 minutes and 18 seconds left in the half. Tarvaris Jackson connected with last year's break-out player, tight end, Visanthe Shiancoe.
The half ended with the Chiefs on top, 10-7.
After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless ball, Kansas City finally drove the ball down and connected on a 37-yard field goal by "Mr. Irrelevant", Ryan Succop. Succop was anything but irrelevant on this night.
Nearly two minutes later the Vikings scored on a 64 yard bomb from Tarvaris Jackson to potential roster-spot filler, Darius Reynaud.
Minnesota took a one point lead after the extra point.
In the fourth quarter, second-year player, Taylor Melhaff from Wisconsin connected on a 29-yard field goal shortly after he had missed a 45 yarder.
The game looked to be wrapped up until the Chiefs got the ball with a little under four minutes left.
Kansas City drove the ball all the way down to the Vikings one-yard line. On fourth and goal from the one, Matt Gutierrez attempted to throw a fade route to the corner of the end-zone.
The pass was thrown too far, and was therefore incomplete.
As a result, the Vikings escaped with a narrow win over the Chiefs, 17-13.
Tarvaris Jackson was by far the Vikings player of the game. He completed 12 of 15 passes for 202 yards, and two touchdowns.
He played well throughout the game. There were times where the commentators critiqued over things that most quarterbacks do. You can't disrespect somebody who is playing like Jackson played tonight.
Darius Reynaud caught two balls for 88 yards along with a 64-yard reception for a touchdown as mentioned earlier.
On the defensive side of the ball, Jasper Brinkley led the defense with 5 tackles.
Cornerback, Benny Sapp, a former Kansas City Chief, recorded a sack that forced a fumble but was recovered by a Chiefs offensive lineman.
Brett Favre only threw four passes. He completed one for four yards. He must like the number four.
Overall, the Vikings played decent football. The defense only allowed 298 total yards.
The way it looks, Minnesota should keep four running backs on the roster. Albert Young and Ian Johnson are both good on special teams.
If one of them has to go, it should be Albert Young. Ian is a better receiver and could be utilized occasionally on offense throughout the course of the 2009 season.
Minnesota is now 2-0, and travels to Texas to take on the Houstan Texans on monday night.
Typically, the third preseason game is where the starters play the most time. Tune into see this game. It's bound to be an offensive battle.
