The Real Fantasy Football Sleepers

Art AlbaAug 21, 2009

The "fantasy football sleeper" is a term thrown around in the weeks before drafts, even though most of the names associated with that term aren't really sleepers.

I have been to a couple different sites looking for sleepers that catch my eye and I couldn't believe the names I was seeing. Aaron Rodgers, LaDainian Tomlinson, Chad Ochocinco, and Greg Olsen were just a few of the names I saw masquerading as "sleepers." Enough is enough. Aaron Rodgers, a projected top five quarterback cannot be considered a sleeper, nor can Tomlinson, Ochocinco, or Olsen.

Being projected in the top ten or fifteen of your position does not qualify you as a sleeper, which is why I came out with my own list.

Here are a few players from each fantasy position who could end up being important players on your run to the title:

Quarterbacks

- Trent Edwards (BUF) - If T.O. can stay happy, healthy, and out of trouble, Edwards has two big time receiving options.

- Mark Sanchez (NYJ) - If he can win the starting job from Clemens and the run game holds its own, Sanchez could be a top 10 or 15 fantasy quarterback when this season is all said and done.

- Brady Quinn (CLE) - He is going to finally get the starting nod under Mangini, and the Browns are going to be down a lot this year, so I expect to see a lot of passing.

Running backs

- Cedric Benson (CIN) - He will be the feature back in Cincinnati and with Palmer being healthy, he could end up over 1,000 yards and pushing double digit touchdowns.

- Julius Jones (SEA) - He will be sharing carries with TJ Duckett, but Seattle will have a heavy dosage of running under new coach Jim Mora Jr.

- Felix Jones (DAL) - He is slotted to take Julius Jones' old role when he was in Dallas being the set up man for MB3. Expect a lot of carries between the 20s and earlier in the game.

- Ray Rice (BAL) - He is atop the depth chart in an offense that runs the ball with authority, and McClain is set to start at fullback.

Wide Receivers

-Josh Morgan (SF) - There is a very real chance Crabtree may not be in a Niner's uniform by the beginning of the season, and he showed flashes of potential as a rookie last year.

- Domenik Hixon/Steve Smith (NYG) - Eli is going to have to throw to somebody this season, and Hixon will be the deep threat while Smith will occupy the underneath routes.

- Earl Bennett (CHI) - He will be catching for his old college quarterback, and Hester is going to be the guy getting double coverage, so Bennett should be seeing a lot of open looks.

-Devin Thomas (WAS) - He has a very promising upside, and I could see him beating out Randle-El sometime in the near future for a starting gig.

Tight Ends

-Brent Celek (PHI) - LJ Smith has moved on to Baltimore, and McNabb loves his tight ends.

-Vernon Davis (SF) - Has been dubbed the nick-name "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" but will see more looks this season with Martz gone as Offensive Coordinator.

I hope these tips help you out in your quest for league domination.
