Moves Borussia Dortmund Should and Should Not Make in the Summer Transfer Window

Stefan BienkowskiMar 19, 2015

Borussia Dortmund are now out of the Champions League and may well end this Bundesliga season without European qualification, ensuring a heavy summer of rebuilding is in store for Jurgen Klopp and his troubled side.

Every fan of the famous German side will have his or her own opinion on who should stay and go and just which of Europe's best players will make a significant difference to the club's immediate fortunes next season.

As such, we've done the hard work for you and gone through just what Klopp should and shouldn't do in this summer's transfer window.

Do: Buy a Left-Back

One of the most important things Klopp has to do this summer is ensure Dortmund start the new season with a competent, long-term left-back in place for the coming campaign.

Of course that doesn’t specifically mean selling Erik Durm or Marcel Schmelzer—both are capable backup players within the overall squad—but it does mean signing a quality defender who can match the likes of Mats Hummels and Marco Reus in quality and skill.

Don't: Sell Ilkay Gundogan

As we all know, Dortmund have signed up Marco Reus to a new, long-term contract, yet their other star midfielder—Ilkay Gundogan—has yet to commit himself to the club.

The box-to-box player does run the risk of running out his contract, which ends in 2016, which could mean Klopp’s team may yet choose to cash-in on the player if he ends up opting to leave.

The German international is an imperative member of the squad, and should he keep fit over the summer months, he’ll prove to be even better and more important to Dortmund next season.

Regardless of whether he chooses to leave the club in 2016, Klopp’s side will still need him in the next campaign.

Do: Sign a Right-Back

In a similar state to the problems on Dortmund’s left flank, Klopp will have a considerable headache when it comes to his right-back position, which has crumbled to dust of late.

There once was a time when Lukas Piszczek was considered one of Europe’s brightest right-backs, yet the Polish international has left consistent injury and the overall form of his squad get the better of him over the past 18 months.

Even if the right-back still has the ability, it doesn’t seem as though his body is capable of allowing him to play an entire season.

As such, Dortmund need a new right-back. Oliver Kirch and Kevin Grosskreutz are a breath of fresh air from time to time, but neither of these three defenders are up to winning Bundesliga championships.

Do: Sell Sven Bender

We continue this list of dos and do nots for Klopp this summer with a rather blunt assault on one of his most favoured players: Sven Bender.

The defensive midfielder is one of his manager’s most trusted players when it comes to effort and loyalty to the squad, but unfortunately the German international is far from instructive or indeed helpful to Dortmund anymore.

Bender’s style of play doesn’t help Klopp’s side at all, and as we’ve seen countless times this season, he’s offered nothing but nervous and inconsistent performances throughout this troubled campaign.

Don't: Sign Another Striker

One of the most compelling and somewhat tempting moves for Klopp this summer is to wipe the slate clean with his band of misfiring strikers and to simply start again with new players.

This simply wouldn't work. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been in fantastic form this season, but more importantly, he's proven that it does take genuinely talented players at least a season to acclimatise to Dortmund's style of football.

Adrian Ramos and Ciro Immobile deserve a season of transition to find their feet at Dortmund and could well prove to be vitally important next season.
