Alex FischlerAug 20, 2009

The Giants offense had started to produce the past couple of days. They had scored 26 runs in their last 5 games and were hoping for more this afternoon.

Unfortunately things didn't go as planned as the Giants fell 2-1 to the Reds in the final game between these two teams this year.

Giants' pitcher Matt Cain threw well going eight innings and only allowing a run while scattering eight hits. But once again the offense couldn't hold up their end of the bargain.

The Giants had multiple chances to score in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings but couldn't muster up one run to take the lead. Leadoff hitter Eugenio Velez only needed a sacrifice fly to bring home Eli Whiteside home in the seventh but couldn't get the ball out of the infield.

In the eighth the Giants had runners on first and third with only one out. But pinch hitter Edgar Renteria grounded into the double play to end the inning. In the ninth San Francisco had runners on first and second with one out but Velez and and Juan Uribe could not get the hit the Giants needed.

In fact the the Giants' only run of the game came on a wild pitch by Reds' starter Aaron Harang in the fourth inning. Reds' starter Aaron Harang threw seven strong innings yielding one run on six hits.

The Reds came back in the in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run from Laynce Nix to tie the score at 1-1.

Both teams could not score until the bottom of the 10th when Reds' rookie Drew Stubbs homered off Giants' reliever Bob Howry to end the game.

Extra Notes from today's game:

  • Reds 2B Brandon Phillips left in the third inning with a sore wrist that has been bothering him since last Saturday when he was hit by a pitch.
  • Giants' catcher Benjie Molina got the day off.
  • The Giants begin a crucial series with the Rockies tomorrow at Coors Field. First Pitch is scheduled for 6:10 and Jonthan Sanchez will take the hill for San Francisco.
