Floyd Mayweather Challenged by Keith Thurman for Post-Manny Pacquiao Fight
Floyd Mayweather Jr. likely only has one thing on his mind at the moment: his May 2 fight with Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
However, he has now been called out by Keith "One Time" Thurman, the undefeated 26-year-old who has challenged his compatriot to a post-Pacquiao fight.
Mayweather will have one fight left on his Showtime/CBS contract after his clash with eight-division world champion Pacquiao, and WBA welterweight champion Thurman wants to be his last opponent.
It is a bold challenge from the Floridian, but he certainly seems eager, unsurprising given Mayweather's pedigree and the amount of money Thurman could make from such a clash, per Undisputed Championship Network (h/t Chris Williams on Boxing News 24):
"You can’t take over the welterweight division without facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. If he [Mayweather] wants to take on a top dog who’s rated E, ready to hurt him like he’s never been hurt before, then offer me a contract, baby. You don’t got to pay me $80 mil. You know what I’m saying? We can negotiate. If Floyd Mayweather wants to make me his last fight on his Showtime contract it’ll be an honor. I’d be looking forward to it, and I’d train my [backside] off.
"
The full interview, following Thurman's unanimous-decision victory in Las Vegas on March 7 over Robert Guerrero, can be seen below:
Thurman has a 25-0 record with 21 knockouts, his latest victory coming against California-born Guerrero, but Glove2Face believes he is still some way off the elite level:
He is also not yet a huge name within boxing, and it is unlikely that Mayweather would agree to a fight against a low-profile opponent like Thurman.
Williams suggests that Thurman needs to fight Danny Garcia, Marcos Maidana, Lucas Matthysse, Amir Khan and Kell Brook, and beat them all, before he can be a considered a legitimate opponent for Mayweather, especially with Money's career drawing to a close.
However, there will be no plans made until after Mayweather's megafight with Pacquiao, which CompuBox's Bob Canobbio casts his eye over below, per Bleacher Report:
If Thurman has true ambitions to fight Mayweather, he will have to do something impressive in his next fight, and even then, there are plenty of others ahead of One Time in the list to take on the world's best boxer.
