BJ Penn's Pool Jump Challenge Update
A while ago, I wrote an article about BJ Penn's MMA-?urn=mma,177359" title="BJ's Jump">jump out of a three foot deep pool, where I said that I wasn't overly impressed, as other people had already done the jump previously.
Now, Jake Rosholt has upped the ante a little bit, by jumping out of a three foot pool backwards. Good.
However, while this does seem to be a harder feet, I'm still not overly impressed.
Why you ask?
Because a football player named Keith Eloi already did it a month ago.
While I'm happy that the story is out that the jump is very possible for good athletes, I still find Cagewriter editor Steve Cofield's reaction to be strange.
First off, he seems ignorant of the fact that Keith Eloi already did the jump, despite the fact that it would appear on the first page of a YouTube search for "pool jump."
Furthermore, he says, "Cagewriter posted the Penn YouTube video on a Saturday with 3,000 views, it's now at 3.343 million. Clearly viewers were impressed."
I fail to understand his logic here, because much of the reason that the video received 3.343 million views was because the Cagewriter blog had BJ's pool jump featured on the Yahoo! front page, with a headline like "UFC Star Performs Amazing Feat!"
On the Cagewriter article for Penn's jump, it is titled, "BJ Penn is the best athlete in MMA?"
And the Saturday it was posted also happened to be the Saturday one week following UFC 100, when the buzz over MMA was still at a very high level.
Anyway, as unimpressed as I am by many factors, I am least impressed by Steve Cofield's journalism.
Furthermore, he doesn't understand the physics of the jump. It's not just about leg power, as the other important thing is to have the core-strength and flexibility to pull your knees up to your chest.
But as I know that people are going to tell me that it is easy for me to be critical when I haven't done any pool jump, let me say that I am up for the challenge.
If anyone knows of a three foot deep pool in London, Ontario, Canada, send me some information, and I'll be happy to post a video of me, the non-professional athlete, attempting the pool jump.
