Most Disappointing New York Mets Players in Spring Training so Far

Shale BriskinMar 12, 2015

Through their first nine spring training games, the New York Mets are 3-6. But in spring training, the team records are not as important as player development. The main goal of spring training, aside from preparing for the regular season, is to see which players would be the best fits on the major league roster.

Some Mets players have done well so far in spring training, while others simply have not. Here are the most disappointing Mets in spring training at this point.

RF Michael Cuddyer

1 of 5

Spring Training Stats: 8 AB, .000/.111/.000, 1 BB, 2 K

Michael Cuddyer was signed this offseason to add more power to the Mets' lineup from the right side. However, in his spring training debut as a Met, he is hitless in eight at-bats.

It is still early and spring training stats may not mean all that much. Nonetheless, it would still be nice to see Cuddyer get into a groove at the plate before the season begins.

C Travis D'Arnaud

2 of 5

Spring Training Stats: 17 AB, .118/.118/.118, 2 H, 1 RBI, 1 K

Another starting hitter that has had a poor spring training so far is Travis d'Arnaud, who only has two hits in his first 17 at-bats.

D'Arnaud's job isn't exactly in jeopardy, as he is clearly the Mets' catcher of the future. That is unless the team values catching prospect Kevin Plawecki more. But regardless, d'Arnaud has nothing to worry about right now. He's off to a poor start in spring training, but that shouldn't be a sign that he will not have a good season.

Hopefully, d'Arnaud is using up all his bad swings right now and saving his good swings for the regular season.

2B Dilson Herrera

3 of 5

Spring Training Stats: 13 AB, .077/.143/.077, 1 H, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K

Dilson Herrera is yet another Mets hitter struggling at the plate with only one hit in 13 at-bats. If he wants to be back on the major league roster soon, he will certainly have to hit better than that.

Herrera could be the Mets' second baseman of the future one day, but right now, Daniel Murphy looks like he will continue to hold the position. In other words, it's not as if Herrera is playing for a starting job on the major league roster. He's likely to begin the year in the minor leagues regardless.

Hopefully, Herrera will make the most of all of his opportunities and turn into a great player one day.

SP Zack Wheeler

4 of 5

Spring Training Stats: 1 G, 0-1, 32.40 ERA, 6 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K, 1.2 IP

This is a small sample size for Zack Wheeler of course, but in his only spring training appearance so far, Wheeler got lit up. He allowed six earned runs in less than two full innings despite only allowing two hits.

However, Wheeler also allowed two walks and his control has been a topic of concern for quite some time. It's been a big knock on his potential, but hopefully, Wheeler will improve his control this year and allow fewer walks.

Again, Wheeler needs another start or two to really see if he's having a bad spring or not, but thus far, he has not looked sharp on the mound.

MR Sean Gilmartin

5 of 5

Spring Training Stats: 2 G, 0-0, 13.50 ERA, 3 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 2.0 IP

Rule 5 draft pick Sean Gilmartin is currently trying to crack the Mets' Opening Day bullpen. His first two spring training outings have not helped his cause, though.

Gilmartin has allowed three runs in two appearances so far, and with a good amount of competition present for the last few bullpen spots, he will need to have a better second half of his spring training to secure a roster spot.

The Mets really need a dependable second left-handed reliever in the bullpen, and hopefully Gilmartin can be that guy this season.
