Georgia Football: Ranking the Bulldogs' Top Recruiting Targets for 2016
The 2015 signing class has a chance to be a great class for the Georgia Bulldogs. With guys like Trent Thompson, Jonathan Ledbetter and Rico McGraw in the fold, the class has a chance to do some special things before it leaves Athens.
That said, the 2016 signing class is shaping up to be on the same level. Seven players have committed, including Jacob Eason, who is the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the country.
The Bulldogs are looking to get stronger on the offensive and defensive lines, and they are also looking to add depth at the skill positions. There are some talented recruits out there, and the Bulldogs are not letting them out of their sight.
Here are the rankings of the top recruiting targets for the Bulldogs.
No. 5: WR Charlie Woerner
1 of 5
Standing at 6’5” and 220 pounds, Charlie Woerner has the size to be an elite receiver. However, because of his size, he can also play a number of other positions, such as linebacker, safety or tight end.
Woerner is listed as one of the 15 best receivers in the country, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, and he’s the nephew to former UGA great Scott Woerner.
It would make sense for the coaches to go after Charlie since he can do so many things on the field, but because he can play every position at an elite level, he’s a player whom the Bulldogs could use moving forward, especially if a key skill player goes down with an injury.
No. 4: OT E.J. Price
2 of 5
With John Theus in his final year as a Dawg, Georgia will need to add talent to the offensive tackle position. So E.J. Price is high on the Bulldogs’ list, but Auburn, Florida State and Michigan wouldn’t mind having him as well.
Price is the 10th-best offensive tackle in the country, via 247Sports’ composite rankings, and he can do everything that is asked of him in terms of playing the position.
One of the other qualities that Price has is that he’s a winner, as he led Central Gwinnett High School (Lawrenceville, Georgia) to the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs last season. There are very few players in the state of Georgia who are better than Price, which is why the Bulldogs need to sign him in February.
No. 3: ATH Marquez Callaway
3 of 5
Another versatile player who is high on Georgia’s list is Marquez Callaway from Warner Robins, Georgia. Callaway is slated to play at wide receiver should he come to Athens, but he can play cornerback at an elite level as well.
247Sports’ composite rankings list Callaway as the third-best athlete in the country. He has the size (6’2”, 170 lbs) and speed to be a dangerous receiver, but he also has the hips and the awareness to be a lockdown corner.
Like Woerner, Callaway can help the Bulldogs in a number of ways. He might prefer to play offense, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he’s playing both ways should he join the Bulldogs.
No. 2: DT Julian Rochester
4 of 5
McEachern High School, located in Powder Springs, Georgia, was able to reach the Class 6A state semifinals last season partially because of Julian Rochester.
The defensive tackle has great size (6’5.5”, 315 lbs), is very strong and is elite at the point of attack. The Bulldogs added Trent Thompson this year, but one can never have enough defensive tackles, especially when the Bulldogs have a heavy defensive line rotation with defensive line coach Tracy Rocker.
The problem is Auburn is also high on his list, via 247Sports, and odds are he could end up at the Plains. But the Bulldogs will keep pressing, and anything is possible when signing day arrives.
No. 1: DT Derrick Brown
5 of 5
The Bulldogs aren’t messing around when it comes to going after defensive tackles, because Derrick Brown is another guy who is on their radar.
Brown, who is from Buford, Georgia, has good size like Rochester (6’4”, 305 lbs), he’s strong enough to push opposing offensive linemen and he can also play defensive end if needed.
247Sports has Brown listed as one of the five best prospects in the country because of his production on the field as well as his potential moving forward.
Brown finished his junior season at Lanier High School with 101 tackles, 26 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks. He’s the dominant defensive tackle the Bulldogs have been looking for, and based on 247Sports’ Crystal Ball predictions, it looks like the Bulldogs will be in line to get him.
